Existential theory, rooted in the principle of human free choice, posits that individuals create their own purpose and meaning. This perspective asserts that humans are not bound by a predetermined fate or divine will but instead possess the autonomy to define their identity. Friedrich Nietzsche, a powerful influence on existential thought, developed a concept called 'The Death of God'. In it he suggests that divine authority has diminished in society, leading to a crisis of values and the meaning of life. The more freedom an individual has, the greater their responsibility to make choices that reflect their values and principles. Central to existential theory is the concept that existence precedes essence, meaning individuals are born without inherent purpose and must create their own through choices and values. Existential philosophers argue that the purpose of life is to forge meaning from an initially "meaningless" existence. Existentialism identifies four ultimate concerns—freedom and responsibility, isolation, death and meaninglessness—that encapsulate the human condition. The recognition of complete responsibility for our actions underscores the existentialist pursuit of authenticity. Individuals define themselves through their decisions and experiences, bearing full accountability for the consequences, foreseen or unforeseen. This responsibility extends beyond mere accountability; it involves accepting the profound impact of our choices on oneself and others. Often, in psychological therapy, one is encouraged to place focus on external factors like childhood traumas, family problems, difficult relationships, etc. Existentialism, however, encourages us to be responsible for the choices we make and face our fears and anxieties head on. It offers a framework for understanding human freedom and the quest for meaning. How can existentialism help us to navigate the multitude of psychological operations humans have been subjected to over centuries? How can we accept the responsibility that comes with freedom? What is the benefit of asking existential questions to ourselves?
