  • Microsoft Is Combining Its Two 'Copilot' Apps (and Ditching These Three Features) Microsoft Copilot is a little messy. Unlike ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude, the company's AI service isn't one universal product. Instead, there's "Copilot," the AI for consumers, directly competing with the aforementioned AI apps; and "Microsoft 365 Copilot," the AI for professional use in Microsoft's work suite. Unless you're totally immersed in Microsoft's AI culture, you might be understandably confused about Copilot, and what features and plans belong to which version of the AI. Luckily, you don't need to be confused any longer. This week, Microsoft announced its intentions to merge its Copilot and Microsoft Copilot 365 platforms into a single app. If you use Copilot as you would ChatGPT or Gemini, you'll use this app. If you use Copilot with Word and Excel for work or school, you'll use this app. Essentially, if you're using Microsoft's AI for any reason, this will be the app of choice. It might not seem particularly impactful for anyone who uses only one version of Copilot, but if you have to bounce between Copilot and Microsoft Copilot 365, you'll understand the immediate benefits of avoiding two different Copilot apps on screen at once, as The Verge highlights. What's new with Microsoft's unified Copilot app? As Copilot and Microsoft Copilot 365 are two different experiences, the changes you'll see in the new Copilot app will depend on the app you currently use. Microsoft Copilot 365 users should only have to update their existing app, and Microsoft says users can expect minor navigational changes when switching over. There's also a new app icon, as well as direct access to Copilot chat from the new app. Copilot users who use Microsoft's AI with their personal account seem to have the most changes to look out for. You should expect to move over to the new app on desktop, but mobile users should be able to switch via an app update. Either way, Microsoft says your chats and content will move over with you. If you use both apps, all your chats and content will merge into the new app, though each will be tied to the specific account you created them with. Which Copilot features are Microsoft abandoning? Perhaps the biggest news here is what isn't carrying over to the new app. Microsoft says it's ditching three legacy Copilot features as part of this transition: Podcasts, Deep Research, and Group Chat messages. Microsoft will discontinue all three on Aug. 18, so you don't have much time to continue using them. If you use Copilot's Group Chat feature, make sure to copy any messages or images from your chats before that deadline, as chats will no longer be accessible after Aug. 18. The same goes for Podcasts: You won't be able to generate new podcasts, nor will you be able to access your generated podcasts after the deadline, so export them ahead of time. Any reports you made using Deep Research will be accessible after Aug. 18, but you won't be able to use the feature unless you are a Microsoft 365 Premium subscriber. You don't have to look far to find replacements for these features. Google's "Gemini Notebook" (formerly NotebookLM) can create AI-generated podcasts for you, and just about every other major AI platform offers its own Deep Research feature. That said, Microsoft isn't the only one retiring features: OpenAI shuttered its AI video generator, Sora, earlier this year, as well as ChatGPT Atlas, its short-lived AI browser. It seems Microsoft is particularly focused on consolidating its AI offerings, seeing as the company has also been removing "unnecessary" Copilot features from Windows. via Lifehacker (author: Jake Peterson)

  • How to Tell If That Apple 'Threat Notification' Is Legit Threat actors are always finding ways to make their attacks seem more believable—often by using urgent security matters that push victims to act quickly—so you should always be skeptical of messages and notifications warning you that your device or account has been compromised. That said, if you receive a spyware warning from Apple via push notification, it's likely real, and you shouldn't ignore it. Apple's threat notification system is designed to alert individuals who have been targeted by mercenary spyware, such as Pegasus, which can silently infect devices and track everything a user does. Since 2021, the company has sent these alerts multiple times a year. In the vast majority of cases, those affected are in high-profile positions—such as politicians, journalists, and activists—that are at a high risk of being targeted. That means the average user is unlikely to ever receive one of these notifications, so it's important to understand how they work and be able to identify what's legitimate and what's not. Verify Apple threat notifications before taking action According to Apple's support document, threat notifications are now being distributed via push notifications to affected users' iPhones. These alerts will appear on the Lock Screen and in Settings. Users will also receive an email alert to the address linked to their Apple Account sent from [threat-notifications@email.apple.com]. (Previously, Apple sent alerts via email and Messages.) Lock Screen alerts will have a red warning icon and read "Apple Threat Notification: Apple detected a mercenary spyware attack targeted at your iPhone. There are actions you can take now to help protect your data and your device." If you receive a push notification or an email that appears to be from Apple, you should take it seriously and also verify it in your device Settings and Apple Account dashboard, as scammers may try to capitalize on this by sending fake alerts that impersonate Apple. When you go to Settings on your iPhone, you'll see an Apple Threat Notification menu just below your main profile. Then, log into account.apple.com—there will be a banner at the top of the page labeled "Threat Notification" with a link to view additional details. Legitimate threat notifications from Apple will never require you to click links, download files, install apps, or provide credentials by email or phone. If you're urged to do any of these things, it's a scam. You should be especially wary of security-related notifications if you're not a high-risk iPhone user who is likely to be targeted. That said, affected users are advised to follow Apple's recommended steps to protect themselves. This may include turning on Lockdown Mode, an OS-level security setting that severely limits iPhone features in order to block malicious actors from gaining access. If you receive an Apple threat notification, you can also contact Access Now's Digital Security Helpline, which is available 24/7, for assistance. via Lifehacker (author: Emily Long)

  • You Can Have Google Meet Take Notes for Your In-Person Meetings Too Google Meet's "Take Notes for me" feature is one particularly useful implementation of AI. When you're on a video call, Gemini can dictate what's being said, offering summaries and highlights of the conversation. Your attention doesn't need to be split between the conversation at hand and writing down notes to remember key points later: The notes are automatically generated as a Google Doc once the meeting is over. It's the kind of feature that sells me more on the whole "AI assistant" thing, much more so than an app trying to order me a coffee. Video conferencing isn't the only time dictation can be useful, of course. An in-person meeting can benefit from the same perks as a virtual one: Why bother with scribbling down notes on paper or typing away on a laptop when your phone can transcribe the chat on your behalf? I've used the Voice Memos app on my iPhone for the task, since it's easy to record audio and an generate automatic transcription of the conversation that way. But if you're a regular Google Meet user, you now have a similar option in your app of choice, as Meet's "Take Notes for me" feature now supports live, in-person meetings too. How "Take Notes for me" works in person As noted by 9to5Google, here's how it works: You open the Google Meet site or app on your device, but rather than start a call, you can use the "Take Notes for me" option to task Gemini with transcribing and summarizing your discussion. You can hit "Pause" at any time to pause dictation, and "Stop" followed by "Stop taking notes" to end it altogether. You can also transition to a video call if you want to conference in someone who isn't in the same room as you. And, just as with a Google Meet call, Take Notes for me will automatically save the meeting notes in a Google Doc. Google first announced this feature back in April, but is now widely rolling it out to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers, as well as Workspace plans. If you have a Workspace account, your admin may need to activate it on their end, at which point you should be able to start recording your own conversations. Google says the feature works across platforms, but will roll out along different timelines: It has been trickling out to Android since Aug. 11; web users will start seeing it today, Aug. 14; and iOS users will see it starting Aug. 31. Try an alternative to Google Meet's in-person dictation There are plenty of alternatives if you don't have "Take Notes for me" available to you in Google Meet. It won't be a perfect match, since Google Meet integrates with your Google account and does more than just transcribe the call, but there are other options worth considering. As I mentioned, I really like using Apple's built-in tools: Voice Memos can generate automatic transcriptions, which you can save to Apple Notes. But if you don't have an Apple device or you prefer another option, PCMag has a series of recommendations, including Otter.ai, GoTranscript, and Rev. via Lifehacker (author: Jake Peterson)
