Overall, to both high school students and undergraduates, I really recommend following international communities, organizations, and people on LinkedIn. Even if you’re not actively applying for opportunities yet, simply knowing what’s out there can give you a much clearer sense of direction. Here’s what I’d recommend: 1. Search for keywords related to your interests (e.g. bioengineering, business, marketing, linguistics, neuroscience, etc.). 2. Follow people, organizations, and communities that regularly share interesting articles, opportunities, and discussions in your field. 3. Explore the profiles of people whose careers inspire you. Look at who they follow, whose posts they engage with, and who they’re connected to. You’ll often discover many more interesting people and communities that way. 4. Engage with posts you genuinely find valuable. Over time, LinkedIn will recommend more content aligned with your interests. It also broadens your perspective on the kinds of opportunities that exist and helps you feel connected to communities of people with similar goals. 5. Be intentional about who you follow and connect with, since they shape what appears in your feed. 6. Having a polished profile and posting occasionally is definitely a plus, but it’s not necessary to discover opportunities, especially if you’re still in high school or in your first years of university. Your priority should simply be building awareness of what’s available. That said, maintaining a professional LinkedIn presence can become very valuable later on because many recruiters use LinkedIn to identify and reach out to potential candidates with job opportunities.

Interestingly, my summer work starts today as well. I’ll be a full-time research assistant at NYU Abu Dhabi’s lab focused on the Cognitive Science of Language, where I’ll be working on my own project under the supervision of a professor and expert in the field. At the same time, I’ll also be finishing the final stages of work for another lab focused on the Neuroscience of Language and Culture, where I worked throughout my freshman and sophomore years, continuing there in something like a part-time position this summer. On top of that, there are two other things I’ll be doing this summer related to my education (though not lab-related), so it’s definitely going to be a very intense few months ahead. I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to spend this summer fully focused on the kind of work I want to dedicate myself to in the future. I’m also deeply grateful for the opportunities NYUAD and my professors have given me, and grateful to myself for the dedication and exploration I’ve committed to over the past two years. I hope to continue growing and do much better in the next two. Hopefully, something meaningful and impactful will come out of all of this.

And with that comes the end of my sophomore year -- the very last submission of this year for my Core Curriculum literature class. I can finally call myself a rising junior 🥳🥳

An amazing opportunity for high school students interested in neuroscience

Just came across this and thought it was worth sharing These are brain scans. The bright yellow/orange spots show areas that are active. Top row brain scans = the semantic network → the “linguistic” parts of the brain that will light up if you are engaged in the tasks requiring understanding the meaning of words and concepts (basically language and knowledge). Bottom row = the default mode network → what’s active when we’re daydreaming, remembering, or thinking to ourselves. What’s really interesting is how much these overlap. Even neuroscience shows that language isn’t just about speaking or grammar or communication; it’s deeply connected to our thoughts and thus who we are, and it is the basis of most other cognitive processes.

Over the past days, the situation in the Middle East brought the reality of war much closer than I had ever experienced before. Iran launched missiles and drones toward the UAE, and for many nights we heard constant alerts, fighter jets above us, and explosions…

Over the past days, the situation in the Middle East brought the reality of war much closer than I had ever experienced before. Iran launched missiles and drones toward the UAE, and for many nights we heard constant alerts, fighter jets above us, and explosions from the air defense system intercepting attacks. It didn’t matter whether we were sleeping, studying, eating, or talking with friends; the sounds were always there. And even though what we heard were the sounds of protection, not destruction, it was still terrifying. When you don’t know whether the next missile might get through, when you don’t know how the situation might escalate, it becomes hard to focus on anything else. The uncertainty is the hardest part. That is why I feel deep gratitude toward the UAE. For 11 days, its defense systems has been watching the sky every single minute, intercepting nearly everything that entered its airspace and protecting millions of lives. Thinking about what could have happened if those missiles and drones had actually landed on UAE lands is something I didn’t have to witness, thanks to the UAE🇦🇪. Because of that protection, we were able to continue living in relative safety. I am also incredibly grateful to NYU Abu Dhabi. In such an unpredictable situation, the university did everything it could to keep students as safe as possible. Maybe the university overprotected us at many times, but I understand them. They didn’t want to risk anything. Moving classes online, encouraging us to stay indoors, and giving us the flexibility to make the decisions that felt safest. In my case, I returned home to Uzbekistan and will continue my studies and research from here. But more than anything, this experience changed my perspective on life. When you spend days wondering whether the sky above you might suddenly become dangerous, your definition of happiness changes. The problems that once felt overwhelming — career worries, future plans, small conflicts — suddenly shrink. Being alive. Being safe. Being surrounded by people who care whether you wake up tomorrow. Those things become everything. What we heard this week were the sounds of defense systems protecting us. And even that was frightening. I cannot imagine what life is like for people who hear the sounds of actual bombings every day: people whose lives are not about planning the future, but simply surviving long enough to have one. This experience made me love and appreciate the people around me even more: my friends, my family, and other close people. When something like this happens, you realize how many people who reach out unexpectedly and check on you so often truly want you alive, safe, and well. And that realization changes you. I stand in solidarity with everyone whose lives have been disrupted by violence and war. More than anything, I hope for safety, peace, and the chance for people everywhere to simply live their lives without fear.
