1️⃣ A PAGE-TURNER - a book that is very exciting and fast to read 📚 This thriller is a real page-turner that kept me up all night. ⏱️ I finished the novel in two hours because it was such a page-turner. 2️⃣ HEAVY-GOING BOOK / A SLUG - a book that is boring or difficult to read 😴 The history textbook was heavy-going and full of dry facts. 🐌 Reading that classic felt like a total slug, but I finally finished it. 3️⃣ A SLOW-BURNER - a story that starts slowly but gets more interesting over time 🕯 The novel is a slow-burner, but the ending makes it completely worth it. 📖 Give the story a few chapters — it is a slow-burner that builds great tension. 4️⃣ A PLOT HOLE - a mistake or inconsistency in a story's plot 🔍 The mystery was ruined by a huge plot hole in the final chapter. ❓ She pointed out a plot hole where a character suddenly appeared in two places at once. 5️⃣ CLIFF-HANGER - a dramatic ending that leaves you in suspense 😱 The second book ended on a massive cliff-hanger, and I cannot wait for the sequel. 🚪 Every chapter of this thriller finishes with a cliff-hanger. 6️⃣ UNEXPECTED TWIST/TURN - a sudden and surprising change in the story 🤯 The unexpected twist at the end completely changed my view of the main character. 🔄 The plot took an unexpected turn just when I thought I had guessed the ending.

  • I created a few pictures for my student to review book expressions, including descriptive adjectives and book-related idioms. Want to try and guess some of them?💬

  • BE IN A RUT to be stuck in a boring, repetitive routine that is difficult to change “I feel like my career is in a rut; I do the exact same things every day.”

  • BE IN A FUNK to be in a state of depression, sadness, or anxiety; to feel down or discouraged “I’ve been in a funk all week and just can’t seem to shake it.”

  • A SLIPPERY ... an idea or action that, once started, leads to an unstoppable and often disastrous chain of events “Skipping one workout is a slippery ... to quitting the gym entirely.”
