  • 💊Drug of the day Acetazolamide 👉It is a Carbonic Anhydrase inhibitor. 👉Used in Glaucoma: In this situation, the optic nerve is damaged. 👉Used as a weak or adjunctive diuretic. 👉It works on the Proximal Convoluted Tubule of the kidney. 👉It acts by blocking the enzyme Carbonic Anhydrase. 👉In Glaucoma, it lowers the pressure of Aqueous humor. 👉Helpful in Mountain Sickness. It increases the breathing rate in altitude sickness and stops the alkalosis. 👉Side effects are Metabolic Acidosis and Hypokalemia. 👉It makes the urine alkaline; just because of this, the risk of stone can occur. 👉It excretes bicarbonates through urine. 👉Acetazolamide inhibits the generation of bicarbonate ion in the ciliary epithelium. 👉Carbonic Acid: H2CO3 👉Due to inhibition of Carbonic Anhydrase, hydrogen ions are not available for exchange with Sodium. So, sodium is not reabsorbed and is eliminated. Along with it, water is also eliminated. Diuresis produced by acetazolamide is accompanied by loss of bicarbonate and potassium. 👉It also has an anti-thyroid and anti-convulsant effect. 👉It is eliminated by the kidney in an active form.
