{Continued from above} I see now that this “waiting for something to happen” — waiting for the flatness, apathy, tiredness and physical symptoms to disappear — was itself what blocked any new state of being or inspiration from coming through. Isn’t this what always happens when we tell ourselves we can’t be free, happy or inspired right now? “I’ve just got to endure this period… and then…” In that moment we guarantee we won’t feel any of those things. This doesn’t mean we should pretend or “fake it till we make it.” That still keeps us trapped in the belief that: this situation, here and now, isn’t right or okay. This version of me, in this state, isn’t good enough, isn’t worthy of love or abundance. So even when we’re off the substance or the habit, we can still be caught in a trap. Some gentler reframes that have been helping me: Can we accept down-time without calling it laziness? Can we accept convalescence without calling it boredom? Can we accept solitude without calling it isolation? Can we accept recharging without calling it being unmotivated? And then, after a random particle of inspiration hit just the right spot, I found myself opening a lyrics and notes book from fifteen years ago… Inspiration arrives like a wizard: precisely when it means to. 🧙🏼‍♂️ It may simply help to prepare for that flash by not waiting. I’ll leave you with the original meaning of the word “wait,” from Etymonline: c. 1200, waiten, “to watch with hostile intent, lie in wait for, plot against…” So when we “wait for something to happen” after quitting something, we are often in a quiet state of hostility toward the present — rather than being in love with the Now, and with ourselves. Can we find a little gratitude for all of it… even for the times we catch ourselves waiting?

Time for some vulnerability. I’ve used (and been used by) various addictive substances and media — including porn — since my late twenties. It’s taken until now for something I wrote about a decade ago to finally click: “Yes, you must first realise that you are caught in a trap, but just as important (perhaps more) is to realise when you are free.” Since quitting something a week or so ago, I’ve hardly done anything productive or creative. Most of my time has been spent consuming — binge-watching high-quality, even inspiring, series and films. I wasn’t craving the substance itself in the usual way. But I still didn’t feel free. What I was really doing was waiting. Waiting for something to happen. Waiting to feel better, inspired, creative, useful. All the while quietly beating myself up for not serving the world in the ways I know I’m capable of. {Continued below}
