4. The radical left traditionally defended secularism, women's rights and freedom of expression. Yet today it often appears reluctant to criticize Islamist movements that precisely challenge those principles. Is this a contradiction, or does it reveal that anti-Western ideology has become stronger than liberal values within parts of the contemporary left? There is undoubtedly a profound contradiction. The European left historically defended secularism (in order to weaken Christianity), freedom of expression (as long as it did not yet control the media) and women's emancipation (until it discovered LGBTQ and migrants’ rights). Today, parts of the radical left often hesitate to criticise Islamist movements that openly challenge these very principles. Why? On the one hand, because Islam is still perceived as a central element in the intentional relativisation of Europe’s Christian heritage; on the other hand, because Muslim migrants are now considered as the newest form of an oppressed revolutionary proletariat and as an expression of the “noble savage” – and thus the main force used in order to destabilise the capitalist society and bring forth a true socialist revolution. 5. If the current trends continue – mass immigration, demographic change, and what you describe as the cultural disarmament of Europe – what will Western Europe look like in twenty years? And is there still a realistic path to reversing that trajectory without abandoning liberal democracy itself? From a certain point of view, it is precisely the application of liberal ideas that has led to the de-Christianisation of Europe and to its suicide by mass-migration. Should present trends continue for 20 years, most Western European countries such as the UK or France will undoubtedly have Muslim population majorities at least in the younger segments of urban cultures, leading ultimately to the marginalisation of the autochthonous Europeans in their own home-country and thus the end of our civilisation. And even should we be able to stop migration and proceed to a remigration of illegal migrants, Europe will never be again what it was 20 years ago, and we would still have to deal with a large and powerful segment of population that is reluctant to integrate. If we want to avoid the worst, Europe needs to recover confidence in its own civilisational identity before it is too late: its historical memory, its cultural traditions, its Christian inheritance, and its capacity to integrate newcomers into a common public culture. Is that still possible under the current democratic conditions and with the economic, political and cultural elites in place nearly everywhere in the West? Many observers describe Belgium, and Brussels in particular, as a laboratory for the interaction between radical left-wing politics and political Islam. From your perspective, what happened in Belgium that the rest of Europe should be paying attention to before it is too late? Belgium, and Brussels in particular, illustrate a phenomenon that is gradually spreading across Western Europe: the weakening of the traditional nation-state and the establishment of what is called “islamo-gauchisme”. Of course Belgium has long been characterised by linguistic fragmentation, a relatively weak national identity and an exceptionally complex institutional structure. These conditions have made it easier for these new forms of politics to develop. In Brussels, the growing demographic importance of immigrant communities, especially of Muslim origin, has coincided with the rise of a radical left ideology increasingly committed to identity politics and influencing even mainstream party thought. The result is not an only a gradual Islamisation of Belgium through increased migration and demographic tendencies, but also the emergence of a political culture in which criticism of immigration, multiculturalism or Islam is regarded as morally illegitimate, and its persecution a tool of political submission. Other European countries should pay attention because Belgium demonstrates how rapidly the erosion of a shared civic identity can transform public debate itself. 2. Do you believe the relationship between the radical left and Islamist movements is based on genuine ideological convergence, or is it simply a tactical alliance against a common adversary—the liberal, capitalist, and historically Christian West? Where do you think this alliance ultimately breaks down? I do not believe this relationship is based on a genuine convergence of ultimate values, as classical Islam and the radical left possess profoundly different anthropologies, conceptions of society and views of the individual. Their alliance is therefore largely strategic. Both oppose what they perceive as the historical West: its cultural traditions, its institutions and, increasingly, its collective identity. Yet this convergence is necessarily unstable. The radical left ultimately seeks an unlimited emancipation of the individual from tradition, whereas Islam remains rooted in a religious and communal understanding of human life. As long as both movements remain united by opposition to the existing order and by the financial dependency of Muslim communities on state-funding through various forms of social spending, their cooperation is possible. But once that funding ceases, or the question needs to be decided what should replace the old order, their differences will become much more difficult to reconcile. 3. You have argued that Europe is experiencing a civilizational crisis. To what extent has the radical left's embrace of identity politics weakened Western societies' ability to defend their own cultural and political traditions, particularly in the face of Islamist movements? The greatest contribution of contemporary identity politics has been to transform Europe's understanding of itself. Every civilisation requires a certain degree of cultural confidence if it wishes to survive. Identity politics, however, tends to interpret the history of Western civilisation primarily through the categories of deconstruction, domination, exclusion and oppression. Of course, every civilisation has committed injustices, and Europe is no exception. But a civilisation that remembers only its faults (real or fictitious) while forgetting its achievements gradually loses the will to preserve itself. This does not merely weaken political cohesion; it also deprives newcomers of any clear understanding of the civilisation they are expected to join.

It will undoubtedly take several more years before this fundamental question is resolved – a question to which even the erratic US President is unlikely to be able to provide a genuine answer – and so it cannot be ruled out that the US, too, may experience its own ‘Carrhae’ against China or perhaps even Russia, in order to test the limits of what is possible and definitively transition from the dynamic and ‘republican’ phase of its history to one of imperial stability and widespread stagnation. Darunter sind bekannte Zeugen der Zeitgeschichte wie Jeanne d’Arc, Václav Havel, Sokrates oder Cato der Jüngere. Besonders hilfreich fand ich die Beispiele aus Japan (Yukio Mishima) sowie China (die sieben Weisen im Bambushain und Qu Yuan), steht doch die asiatische Geschichte in der europäischen Forschung oft im Schatten. Faszinierend auch das Schicksal des Generalmajors von der Marwitz, der die Plünderung des sächsischen Schlosses Hubertusburg im Auftrag von Friedrich den II. verweigert haben soll. Werner Meyer (2014) hält es allerdings für eine Legende. Die Überraschungskopf war aber J.R.R. Tolkien. Mein Interview mit Marion Maréchal, in dem wir auch über mein Konzept des "Hesperialismus" sprachen: "Im Gegensatz zu manchen Souveränisten habe ich keine grundsätzliche Ablehnung gegenüber der Idee der Europäischen Union. Das europäische Aufbauwerk könnte sich als vorteilhaft erweisen, wenn es sich als institutionelle und politische Fortsetzung unserer Zivilisation etablieren würde. Aber dieses Projekt darf natürlich nicht mit der dogmatischen und usurpatorischen Brüsseler Technokratie verwechselt werden, die sich bisher durchgesetzt hat. Es geht keineswegs darum, die nationalen Souveränitäten aufzulösen, sondern darum, zur Kenntnis zu nehmen, dass es den europäischen Nationen auf sich allein gestellt wesentlich schwerer fallen wird, den Herausforderungen der Zivilisationsstaaten (China, Russland, Indien usw.) zu begegnen. Um nicht zu Vasallen von Imperien zu werden, die stärker sind als wir, bräuchten wir ein Europa, das auf den Fundamenten unseres zivilisatorischen Raums aufgebaut ist, das die Stärkung seiner Außengrenzen zu einer seiner Prioritäten erhebt und in strategische Sektoren von kontinentaler Dimension investiert, wie die Digital- und die Raumfahrtindustrie, um nicht wie andere Bereiche von der internationalen Konkurrenz dominiert zu werden – so wie dies erfolgreich beim Flugzeughersteller Airbus oder beim Ariane-Trägerraketenprogramm geschehen ist. Wir müssen aus unseren gemeinsamen Wurzeln schöpfen, d. h. aus dem Erbe der griechisch-römischen Kultur und den Beiträgen des Christentums, um die geistigen, intellektuellen und moralischen Waffen zu finden, mit denen wir weiterhin zur Welt sprechen können.
