Job Description: AI Intern, Synthetic Data Generation Role Overview The AI Intern will investigate, prototype, and help build a synthetic data generation tool to support computer vision model development for industrial use cases such as PPE compliance in clean room environments and manufacturing defect detection. This role focuses on creating practical synthetic image datasets and evaluation workflows that improve the training and testing of AI models for real-world deployment. Key Responsibilities • Research synthetic data generation methods relevant to industrial computer vision, including simulation, data augmentation, and generative AI approaches. • Prototype and develop pipelines to generate synthetic datasets for PPE compliance and manufacturing defect detection use cases. • Prepare synthetic image datasets with the correct labels and organization so they can be readily used to train and validate AI models. • Design experiments to compare synthetic and real data performance across model accuracy, robustness, and failure cases. • Support model training, testing, and iteration using generated datasets, with attention to reproducibility and data quality. • Document methods, findings, limitations, and recommendations for production use of synthetic data in AI workflows. Preferred Project Scope During the internship, the intern is expected to help answer practical questions such as: • Which synthetic data methods are most suitable for PPE compliance versus defect detection? • How much synthetic data improves model performance when real data is limited or difficult to collect? • What tooling, data pipeline design, and quality checks are needed to make synthetic data usable for training and testing at scale? Requirements • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field. • Good foundation in Python and machine learning, especially computer vision or deep learning workflows. • Familiarity with PyTorch, data pipelines, image processing, or model experimentation is preferred. • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to run experiments, interpret results, and communicate findings clearly. • Interest in generative AI, synthetic data, industrial AI, or vision systems for manufacturing and compliance applications. What Success Looks Like By the end of the internship, the intern should deliver a working proof of concept for synthetic data generation, an evaluation of its usefulness for selected AI use cases, and clear recommendations on how synthetic data can be integrated into the company’s model development pipeline. Job Description: Robotics & Vision-Language-Action Role Overview The Robotics & VLA Intern will help develop and validate AI-enabled automation applications using a robotic arm, cameras, and a Vision-Language-Action (VLA) model. The work will focus on selecting a practical task, collecting robot demonstrations, adapting a VLA policy, and evaluating safe, repeatable performance in a real product or industrial setting. VLA models connect visual observations and language instructions to robot actions, and can be adapted to new robot setups through fine-tuning. Potential Project Tracks • Life-cycle testing: Automate repetitive product operations, e.g., opening and closing a hinge for durability testing. Expected outcome: Repeatable motion workflow, cycle-count logging, and abnormal-event or fault detection. • Multi-side inspection: Use the arm and camera to inspect five sides of an assembled product and compare each side with a master reference image. Expected outcome: Vision-guided image capture, pass/fail decision logic, and image/inspection records. • VLA platform: Create a reusable data collection, fine-tuning, and evaluation workflow for future robotic tasks. Expected outcome: Structured demonstrations, a baseline trained policy, and documented deployment guidance. Key Responsibilities • Define and prototype a feasible robotic-arm task, considering repeatability, safety, test coverage, and measurable value. • Set up the robot workcell: motion sequences, camera placement, lighting, fixtures, product positioning, and workspace limits. • Collect and curate robot demonstrations containing visual observations, task instructions, robot states, and action trajectories for VLA training. • Train, adapt, or evaluate an existing VLA/robot-learning policy; integrate computer vision for inspection and decision-making. • Benchmark task success rate, cycle time, repeatability, inspection accuracy, and failure recovery across realistic variations. • Document the architecture, datasets, evaluation results, limitations, and recommendation for the next development stage. Requirements • Currently pursuing Robotics, AI, Computer Science, Mechatronics, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline. • Proficient in Python; familiarity with computer vision, deep learning, robot kinematics, ROS/ROS 2, motion planning, or robotic-arm control is advantageous. • Hands-on, systematic experimental approach; comfortable debugging hardware/software systems and documenting results. What Success Looks Like A working proof of concept for at least one defined task; a structured robot-demonstration dataset and baseline VLA training pipeline; quantified performance results; and a recommendation for scaling the solution. Open VLA models support task-specific, parameter-efficient fine-tuning, making this a practical applied robotics project when the task and workcell are well scoped. So picture it… The clock is running. Your lab access hasn't come through. A model arm costs more than your whole team's budget. And the judges have never experienced lymphedema — the permanent, heavy swelling in a limb that up to 250 million people live with. 𝐆𝐨! Sarah borrowed a mannequin, named her Emily, and made her the demo rig. She traded 4 puppet-show voices for a slot on RC4’s sewing machines. Min Min chased materials; Jordan ran supply trips across the island. And on the morning of the competition, someone was still at the mall buying green tea and a compression sleeve — so the judges could feel the weight themselves. Eventually, Sarah, Hock Jun, Ethan, Min Min and Jordan (a team of iDP x BME E-Scholars) won it, emerging champions of IDEATE 2025! All in their first semester of university.
