Vedic Literature and Languages • The word Veda means supreme knowledge and refers to the oldest scriptures of Hinduism. • The primary Vedas—Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda—are divided by function: invocation, chanting, sacrifice, and spells/charms, respectively. • The Rigveda is the oldest, with 1,028 hymns; Samaveda is mostly chants derived from Rigveda; Yajurveda details ritual practices; Atharvaveda includes charms and spells. • Each Veda has associated Brahmanas (ritual texts), Aranyakas (forest treatises), and Upanishads (philosophical works), with 108 Upanishads, of which 12 are especially valued. Epic Literature and Puranas • The Ramayana (by Valmiki, ~4th century AD) and the Mahabharata (multiple authors, includes the Bhagavad Gita) are the two great Sanskrit epics. • Puranas (18 major works) narrate cosmology, genealogies, and history—compiled mainly during the Gupta period as a cultural response to the rise of Buddhism. Sanskrit Drama and Poetry • Sanskrit drama originates from Bharatmuni’s Natya Shastra and is divided into major (Rupaka) and minor (Uparupaka) forms. • Important dramatists include Bhasa, Shudraka, Kalidasa (regarded as the greatest), Harsha, Bhavabhuti, Magha, and Kumardasa. • Court epics by Ashvaghosha and Kalidasa are highlighted; Kalidasa’s major epics are Kumarasambhava and Raghuvamsa. Science, Mathematics, and Astronomy • Indus Valley Civilization showed early knowledge in irrigation, metallurgy, arithmetics, and measurement. • Notable mathematicians: • Aryabhatta I (author of Aryabhattiya, 5th century AD)—introduced algebraic solutions and series. • Brahmagupta (7th century AD)—developed algebra with negative numbers and zero, cyclic quadrilaterals, and astronomy. • Bhaskara II (12th century AD)—advanced solution methods in algebra. • The Sulva Sutras were early texts on geometry for altar construction. • Astronomy developed through texts like Vedanga Jyotisha (calendar rules), later influenced by Greek astronomy. • Important astronomers: Aryabhatta, Varahamihira, Brahmagupta, Bhaskara II. Medicine and Surgery • The Atharvaveda contains early references to diseases and remedies. • Centers like Taxila and Varanasi emerged as early medical education hubs. • Major compendia: Charaka Samhita (medicine, 1st century AD) and Sushruta Samhita (surgery, 4th century AD). • Materia medica included numerous plants and minerals; surgery included pioneering techniques such as plastic surgery, cataract operations, and cesarean sections. Legal and Religious Texts • Law books (Smriti) included works by Manu, Narada, Brihaspati, and Yajnavalkya, outlining both civil and religious law.
