My chess rating has dropped from just over 1900 to around 1600 over the past few months. Ratings move around, so the first hundred points looked like variance. Then it kept sliding, and at some point variance stops being a good explanation. Those same months are when I started handing most of my coding to AI. That part has gone well by every visible measure. I ship faster and the work is less tiring. What I notice underneath is that I can't hold a problem in my head the way I used to. I read a few lines, get a rough feel for the shape of it, and reach for the prompt box. Chess is where it shows up, because chess won't let you skip that step. There is no autocomplete for a middlegame. You calculate the line, or you play a move that looks reasonable and lose to something you would have spotted a year ago. I keep doing the second one. I'm not saying anyone should stop using these tools. I'm not going to. But if you code with AI all day, it might be worth finding something that makes you sit and think with nothing helping you, and seeing whether you're still as good at it as you assume. I don't have a fix yet. Noticing is not fixing. It's just the point where you can't pretend it isn't happening. What kept me sharp before wasn't discipline. It was that there was no way around the hard part, so the hard part did the training for me. Now it's optional, which means I have to choose it, and I'm not naturally good at choosing it. Disclosure: the thoughts are mine, the wording was cleaned up with AI. Yes, I see it.
