🌐 Another Independent Node for TON For a long time, the main node in the TON blockchain was the one developed by the TON Core team in C++. But over time, alternative implementations began to appear in the ecosystem. The most notable so far has been the Rust node. And now gton has joined them — a full node written from scratch in Go by developer xssnick. For those not deeply into technical details: a node is a program that connects to the TON network, downloads all the blocks, and allows you to interact with the blockchain directly. The more different nodes, the better. For comparison: Ethereum has several independent clients running at once (Geth, Nethermind, Erigon, Reth, Besu, and others). Bitcoin also has multiple implementations — Bitcoin Core, Knots, and several alternatives. Why are new nodes useful? They make the network more resilient. If something goes wrong with one implementation (a bug, vulnerability, or high load), the others continue to work. This reduces risks for everyone — from regular users to large services and wallets. There are more access points, higher stability, and less dependence on a single source. For example, in 2016 Ethereum survived a powerful DoS attack only because, along with the main Geth node, the Parity client was also running — the network didn’t go down while the main version was being fixed. There have also been cases where a single dominant node caused finalization issues and network-wide problems due to its bugs. gton is not for validators yet, but it works great as a reliable and fast connection to the blockchain for apps, indexers, and project backends. Under peak load, dynamic sharding is activated: the network splits into multiple shardchains, increasing throughput while maintaining static fees. ✊ Acton launched on May 11. We’ve already built a game with it On May 11, TON introduced Acton — a new toolchain for smart contract development. Not just another utility, but an attempt to bring the entire developer workflow into one place: from project creation and writing contracts in Tolk to testing and deployment. This is an important shift. The easier it becomes to write contracts, the faster TON will see not only tokens and NFTs, but real on-chain applications: games, social mechanics, and experiments with large-scale user interactions. We decided to test this in practice and built Color War: — color-war.typa.top It’s a pixel game where every pixel is a separate autonomous smart contract. A player chooses a color, selects an area, and sends a transaction through a TON wallet. After confirmation, the changes appear on the canvas in real time. The field is already 140x140 — that’s 19,600 independent pixel-contracts. Architecturally, it can scale much further because each pixel’s address is deterministically calculated from its coordinates. For us, Color War is more than just a pixel battle. It’s a live stress test for TON: wallets, indexing, UX, real-time updates, and mass transactions. With a W5 wallet, a player can repaint up to 100 pixels in a single confirmation, meaning one user can generate a whole batch of on-chain actions at once. And this clearly shows why TON is well suited for these kinds of experiments: lots of small independent contracts, fast confirmations, low transaction costs, and solid user UX on top of blockchain infrastructure. Acton matters here not as some abstract “developer tool,” but as something that shortens the distance between an idea and a working product. We wrote a Tolk contract, built the mechanics, connected the frontend, indexing, and real-time canvas — and now people can actually play it. 💎 Durov’s comment. Is TON the most decentralized blockchain? Today Pavel Durov posted on Twitter that “very few people realize how decentralized the TON network is.” And this is not just a statement made for attention — it is backed by cold mathematics and the Nakamoto coefficient. Recall that this coefficient shows how many participants in a network need to collude in order to stop the system or change its rules. The higher it is, the freer and more decentralized the network is. For example, Bitcoin and Ethereum do not look very strong in this ranking, having a critically low Nakamoto coefficient (only 1–2). In Bitcoin, more than 50% of mining power is concentrated in two mining pools, while in Ethereum dominance comes from services like Lido and exchanges such as Coinbase. Collusion or a failure in just these two points could paralyze transaction finalization across the entire network, making it dependent on the decisions of a few corporations. 📈 What makes TON strong? The Nakamoto coefficient is 78. To disrupt transaction finalization, you would need to coordinate 78 independent validators out of 400. ✈️ Telegram has become a TON validator for the first time in several years 5 hours ago, Telegram publicly became a validator. In doing so, it officially strengthened its integration with the The Open Network (TON) blockchain. This step marks a new stage in the relationship between the popular messaging app and the independent blockchain originally created by Pavel Durov’s team. In 2019, Durov’s team themselves launched and maintained validators on TON during the period when the network was still in a test phase. However, in January 2020, they ended their participation due to the SEC dispute and their exit from the project. In TON, validators are key network participants who: verify and confirm transactions, participate in consensus (Catchain 2.0), produce new blocks, ensure network security and decentralization, take part in key governance votes. One such vote is the MTONGA step 2 initiative announced by Pavel Durov — a reduction of all types of gas fees (including transaction fees). The validator voting has already started, and at the time of posting, 112 out of 400 votes have been collected. 💎 TON is 15x Faster than Solana in Finalization In TON, after the Catchain 2.0 upgrade (the first step of MTONGA according to Pavel Durov), a transaction achieves full finality in approximately 0.8 seconds. Blocks are produced every 400 ms, and the powerful consensus allows validators to reach irreversible agreement almost instantly. Thus, within 400 ms the transaction is confirmed in the shardchain, and after another 400 ms it enters the masterchain and becomes fully irreversible. In Solana, blocks are also produced every ~400 ms, but full finalization (finalized) requires about 32 consecutive block confirmations — this takes 12–13 seconds. Many Solana projects consciously take the risk and show users that the transaction is completed after just 1–2 seconds, although at that point there is still a possibility of a fork and block rollback. This detail was noted by the authors of The Open Dev Blog, and TON core developer Anatoly Makosov agreed with it. He also explained that in TON the "confirmed" status is assigned as soon as validators accept the shardchain block with the transaction. From this moment, the block is considered valid, and the probability of the operation being cancelled tends to zero. Client applications and wallets can safely show the operation as completed already at the confirmed stage. The only thing that may change between confirmed and finalized is the block hash (with a probability of about 1%). That is why exchanges and high-risk services wait for the finalized status, while regular users receive practically instant confirmation. As a result, in TON a transaction becomes truly irreversible in 0.8 seconds, while in Solana it takes 12–13 seconds. The R&D phase has been completed — research and development of the task of speed up operations in the TON blockchain to less than 1 second while maintaining scalability, security, and decentralization. During the work, three key areas were identified that, taken together, will allow the desired result to be achieved. 1. L1 and Node improvements 1.1. New Catchain 2.0 consensus The current Catchain + BCP consensus stack has been replaced with a new protocol — Catchain 2.0, based on Simplex / Alpenglow algorithms adapted to the TON architecture. The consensus protocol determines how validators share data, verify and accept blocks with transactions. Simplex and Alpenglow are modern open consensus protocols that are characterized by high speed and relative simplicity. Catchain 2.0 allows blocks to be finalized in 200–400 milliseconds while maintaining the same level of security. Previously, the block finalization time was about 2.5 seconds. An additional advantage in terms of security is the widespread knowledge of these protocols, which greatly simplifies their audit. 1.2. New block broadcast protocol — "two-step" broadcast Blocks are transferred between network nodes using the broadcast protocol. We have redesigned this network protocol, reducing the block delivery delay from approximately 700 ms to ~100 ms. 1.3. Additional optimizations A number of additional optimizations have also been made to the C++ implementation of the TON node, including: — block compression during transmission; — parallelization of validation; — the ability to exchange data between validators not only via the RLDP2 protocol, but also via TCP or QUIC. Based on the test results, it may be possible to switch to one of these protocols. In addition to the main solutions, the internal statistics system was refined, as well as the internal tools for benchmarks and measurements for nodes, validators, and API. 2. API 2.1. Reduced API latency The Toncenter API has been optimized, resulting in a latency of 30–100 milliseconds for obtaining the status of an operation via the Streaming API V2. 2.2. New functionality Streaming API V2 in Toncenter now returns two statuses of operation instead of one: confirmed — the block has appeared in the shardchain; finalized — the block has been accepted into the masterchain. Previously, only the finalized status was supported. 3. UX A new UX approach has been proposed. Since an operation with the confirmed status has a rollback probability of less than 1%, applications can display it to the user at this stage. The user can then immediately perform the following operations without waiting for finalization. At the finalized stage, the application can additionally mark in the UI that the operation is completely finalized. This is similar to the confirmation model in other blockchains, where the operation is displayed after being included in the first block, and final finalization occurs after several block confirmations — at the same time, the user can immediately continue interacting with the blockchain. This is a solid addition to last year's UX and kernel updates. All of the above components have been completed separately. Component integration is underway, followed by testing on the TON test network.
