ممکن است بیمار با میل روان‌کاو به درمان کردن او همراه شود؛ همان‌گونه که کودک می‌تواند با میل والد به اینکه «والد خوبی» باشد همراهی کند. اگر هدف روان‌کاو درمان بیمار باشد، با همهٔ آنچه این هدف در خود دارد؛ از جمله تصور همه‌چیزدانی و اینکه بداند چه چیزی برای دیگری بهتر است، این امکان وجود دارد بیمار در جریان درمان، خودش را گم کند. یا به تعبیر میلنر(Milner): «نباید روان‌کاوی را با قصد "درمان کردن" کسی آغاز کرد.» درمان روان‌کاوانه پادزهری در برابر تلقین و القای عقیده است؛ جست‌وجویی است دربارهٔ اینکه آدم‌ها چگونه بر یکدیگر اثر می‌گذارند و اینکه هر فرد چگونه زندگی خود را در میان نظام‌ها، قواعد و انتظاراتی شکل داده است که دیگران بر او تحمیل کرده‌اند. ● @freudisalive ● آدام فیلیپس، در باب بهتر شدن
