Is Your Wife Your Companion? ■ Is your wife truly your companion? ■ Do you know her inner world, and does she know yours? ■ If we removed children, expenses, responsibilities, and household duties, would there still be something that makes you enjoy being together? ● A couple may live under the same roof for years, raise children, manage a home, and fulfil their responsibilities, yet gradually become partners in managing life rather than companions in living it. The Quran refers to a wife as “sahibah” (companion) in 2 verses. These verses do not define marital companionship, but the Quranic use of the word invites us to reflect on what companionship can mean within marriage. Marriage is more than a contract; it is a long journey that requires companionship. Aim per the Qur’an: “That you may find tranquillity in them.” True companionship means being able to share your fears, hopes, weaknesses, thoughts, and joys without fear of judgement. The Qur’an also says: “And He placed between you affection and mercy.” Notice the words: “between you.” The home, children, expenses, and responsibilities may surround a couple—but what remains between them? Conversation? Laughter? Trust? Affection? A spouse may be physically close yet emotionally distant. They may live together without truly accompanying one another. Ask yourself: ● Do I enjoy talking to my spouse when there is no problem to solve? ● Do I know what is occupying their heart? ● Can they speak openly without fearing my reaction? ● Do we laugh together? ● Do we share dreams? Do we have time that belongs only to us? This companionship becomes especially meaningful when life becomes difficult—during illness, financial hardship, ageing, or moments of weakness. Perhaps the most beautiful form of marital tranquillity is to discover in your spouse not only a life partner, but a true companion on the journey.
When Character Is Truly Tested: The Story of Sheikh Jaafar Kashif al-Ghita’ Among the stories that reveal the profound effect of self-discipline and spiritual refinement is the remarkable account of Sheikh Jaafar Kashif al-Ghita’ (ra). A person may speak at length about patience, forgiveness, and forbearance. But the truth of these virtues becomes clear when one is personally wronged—especially when one has the power to retaliate, yet chooses not to. The Sheikh was once in Isfahan when he received a sum of money. Between two prayers, he sat distributing it among those in need until not a single coin remained. After the money had run out, a poor man from the descendants of the Prophet approached him. He was in desperate circumstances and asked the Sheikh to give him his share from what had been allocated to the Prophet’s descendants. The Sheikh explained that the money had already been completely distributed, and that had the man come earlier, he would certainly have received his share. The matter could have ended there. But the man became enraged. His anger reached such a point that, in front of everyone, he spat upon Sheikh Jaafar’s beard. Those present were furious and moved towards the man. But Sheikh Jaafar responded differently. He restrained them, asked the man to sit down, and did not merely forgive him. He took hold of the edge of the man’s garment and personally walked among the worshippers, collecting money for him, saying: “Whoever considers my beard dear, let him extend his hand to help this descendant of the Prophet.” The man had turned the Sheikh’s beard into an object of humiliation; the Sheikh turned that very humiliation into a means of fulfilling the man’s need. He did not say, “Throw him out.” He did not say, “How could I give to someone who insulted me?” And he did not allow anyone to harm him. In a single moment, Sheikh Jaafar separated the man’s offence against him from the man’s need for help. The offence was a matter between the man and the Sheikh. But his poverty was not a crime for which he should be deprived of assistance. So the Sheikh collected a considerable amount of money for him, brought it to him, and placed it before him. Then, astonishingly, he began asking the poor man to forgive him, and to intercede for him with his noble ancestor, the Messenger of Allah. The man could bear it no longer and said: “I have forgiven you.” This is what happens when the soul is truly refined: insult does not make a person unjust, and power does not make him vindictive. True character appears not when we are treated well, but when we are wronged—and still choose what is right.
Learning Detachment from the World: The Example of the Prophet Mohammad Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) describes Prophet Mohammad as one who understood the true nature of this world. He says: “He regarded the world as insignificant and made it small in his eyes.” The Prophet has not allowed worldly beauty to become the centre of his heart. Imam Ali says: “He turned away from it with his heart, and caused its remembrance to die within himself.” This does not mean abandoning life, work, family, or lawful blessings. Rather, it means not allowing the world to possess the heart. Imam Ali reminds us: “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah there is sufficient example for you.” The Prophet has experienced hunger with his family and lived simply despite his immense closeness to Allah. Imam Ali asks: “Did Allah honour Mohammad by that, or disgrace him?” Then he answers that Allah certainly honoured him. Thus, worldly abundance is not necessarily a sign of divine favour, nor is simplicity a sign of humiliation. How, then, can we learn from the Prophet? Imam Ali teaches us to remember that we are travellers: “Prepare yourselves—may Allah have mercy upon you—for the call to departure has been made.” He advises: “Do not seek from it beyond what is sufficient.” And: “Let your concern be for what comes after death.” He also says: “Whoever frequently remembers death will be content with little of this world.” True freedom begins when the heart stops depending on what the world can give or take away. Imam Ali therefore says: “Detach yourselves from the ties of this world.” And: “Whoever seeks the Hereafter, the world will seek him until his provision is completed.” The Prophet teaches us that we may live in the world without belonging to it—using its blessings, fulfilling our responsibilities, and preparing our hearts for the eternal life to come. To Our Youth… Keep your parents close: ■ sit with them, ■ make time for their company, ■ listen to them with patience, ■ speak to them with gentleness and respect, ■ and be among the first to respond when they need your help. Do not take their presence for granted. The day may come when you would give anything for one more conversation, one more moment beside them, or one more opportunity to serve them. So honour them while the opportunity is still in your hands. Do not wait until age has weakened them, distance has separated you, or life has taken them beyond your reach. What may seem like a small act of kindness today can carry immense value in the sight of Allah. And remember: goodness is never lost. What you sow in the lives of your parents may one day return to you through your own children. The mercy you show today may become the mercy you receive tomorrow. Whoever honours his parents and treats them with excellence, Allah may bless him with children who will honour and care for him in return. Birr al-walidayn—i.e. the devoted kindness and excellence shown to one’s parents—is among the noblest acts of worship. It is a means of drawing closer to Allah, a source of blessing and success in this world, and a provision for the Hereafter. So cherish your parents while they are still beside you. Sit with them before you miss their company. Serve them before the opportunity passes. Speak kindly to them before their voices become memories. Honour them today, while you still have the gift of tomorrow.
The Ark of Imam Mahdi, the Olive Branch, and Our Martyrs When our master, Prophet Noah (peace be upon him), sought to disembark from the Ark after the Great Flood, he sent forth a bird to search for a place upon which it could settle. 🕊️ The bird circled the earth before returning to the Ark. What did its return signify? It testified that no place of safety yet existed. The Ark alone remained a secure refuge amid the waters. Noah then sent out a raven, but it too departed and returned without finding a resting place. 🕊️ Some time later, he released a dove. This time, it returned bearing an olive leaf in its beak—a sign that the waters had receded and that the first shoots of life had emerged from beneath the flood. Soon thereafter, the Ark came to rest upon Mount Judi, and its passengers finally set foot upon dry land. The condition of Imam Mahdi resembles that of Noah aboard the Ark. Time and again, he looks to see whether treachery, betrayal, and falsehood have receded, and whether sincerity has taken root, flourished, and borne fruit. He sends forth one of his representatives, only for it to become clear that the appointed hour of the Appearance has not yet arrived. The floodwaters of corruption still run too deep, and the Ark has not yet reached the shore. Yet in our own age, another dove has been sent forth. The Divine Spirit has been breathed into the hearts of the people. 🕊️ This time, it returned bearing an olive branch. These are our martyrs. These are our fighters. These are those who remained steadfast beneath the fiercest fire. They are the olive branch—the unmistakable sign that faith, loyalty, and sacrifice still live within this Ummah. And what olive branch could be more blessed than these steadfast souls? — The Gnostic Scholar, Ayatollah Haeri Shirazi
A Call to Preserve Islamic Values in a Changing World Muslim societies today face profound moral and cultural challenges: The rapid spread of social media, consumer culture, and modern ideologies has influenced the priorities and lifestyles of many people. These changes call for sincere reflection and a renewed commitment to the guidance of the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) warned believers about actions that could lead them away from Allah's mercy. Such warnings are not meant to humiliate women or men, but to encourage every believer to examine his or her conduct. In an age where modesty is often dismissed, material success is celebrated above moral character, and religious teachings are frequently questioned, Muslims should be especially careful to preserve their faith and identity. Many scholars have expressed concern that some contemporary movements encourage ideas that conflict with Islamic teachings regarding modesty, family life, and the complementary responsibilities of men and women. Likewise, social media has created an environment where appearance, popularity, and public approval can become more important than sincerity, humility, and obedience to Allah. Excessive consumerism, unhealthy comparisons, and constant exposure to immoral content may gradually weaken spiritual values and distract believers from their true purpose. Islam offers a different path: — It honours modesty, gratitude, strong families, responsible behaviour, and sincere worship. — It teaches that lasting success is not measured by wealth, fame, or personal freedom alone, but by righteousness and devotion to Allah. Every Muslim, whether man or woman, should strive to resist harmful influences, strengthen faith through repentance and worship, and become a source of goodness for the family and the wider community. Through sincere commitment to Islamic principles, believers can preserve their dignity, protect future generations, and seek the pleasure of Allah above all else.
The Quiet Strength That Builds Civilisations In an age when a woman's success is often measured by how closely she competes with men in the marketplace, history offers a different measure of greatness. During the earliest generations of Islam, while men travelled far to spread faith, seek knowledge, and defend their communities, women were entrusted with an equally noble mission: building the home and raising the next generation. Many of the greatest scholars and leaders were shaped by mothers who carried this responsibility with patience, wisdom, and unwavering devotion while their husbands fulfilled duties beyond the household. Their work was quiet, yet its impact echoed through history. A society does not flourish when men and women become copies of one another, but when each fulfils their unique responsibilities with excellence. Dear sister, take pride in your God-given role. From your steadfastness, families find peace, children find direction, and communities discover their enduring strength. Good morning, and may your day be filled with purpose, serenity, and the honour of nurturing what truly lasts.
