In May or June 1969, Jim Morrison met a girl named Lana Elliott at the Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles. One night, after Jim had wrecked his car and had no way to get home, Lana took him to her home in the Hollywood Hills above Sunset Boulevard. The next day, Jim had dinner with Lana’s family in Granada Hills, where he played baseball with the kids and enjoyed fondue with the family.

Throughout his life, The Doors’ lead singer had more than one confrontation with the police. However, this particular incident has gone down in rock history as one of the artist’s most memorable — and iconic. The “New Haven Incident,” as it came to be known in the rock world, took place on December 9, 1967, when The Doors’ frontman Jim Morrison became the first rock artist to be arrested onstage during a concert. At the time, Morrison’s band was enjoying one of the most successful periods of its career. Just a few months earlier, in September, The Doors had released their second LP, Strange Days, which was certified gold and reached No. 3 on the Billboard chart. Still, true to his rebellious nature, even growing public attention was not enough to stop Morrison from speaking out about what he believed was right. That day, as part of the promotional tour for Strange Days, the band was scheduled to perform at the New Haven Arena in Connecticut, United States. Just minutes before the show began, Morrison was reportedly in a backstage bathroom with a female fan, as the late Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek later recalled. At that moment, a police officer assigned to provide security for the band entered the area and, not recognizing Morrison, told them to leave. According to Manzarek, Morrison responded by telling the officer to “eat it.” The officer warned him, “Last chance.” “Last chance to eat it,” Morrison replied. Moments later, the singer was sprayed with mace. Morrison became even angrier when the officer, after realizing that he had just sprayed the lead singer of The Doors, apologized and said, “Sorry, I didn’t know who you were.” Manzarek later recalled that when Morrison took the stage that night, he did everything he could to provoke the police. During the band’s performance of Back Door Man, Morrison — as he often did — launched into one of his characteristic improvised monologues while the band played behind him. “One by one, the officers started turning around. They had been facing the audience, and then they began turning to look at Jim,” Manzarek recalled. Morrison began telling the audience about what had happened backstage. “Little blue man in a little blue hat, a little blue pig. They said that because I was famous, they shouldn’t have sprayed me. But I’m just like you. I’m just like you. He did it to me, and he’ll do it to you,” Morrison told the crowd. The police responded by walking onto the stage and bringing the concert to an end. “You’ve gone too far,” they reportedly told him before arresting him. That night, another 13 people who had attended the concert were also arrested following disturbances sparked by the incident. Morrison was charged with inciting a riot, indecency, and public obscenity. He was released on bail, and the charges were later dropped. It was neither Morrison’s first nor his last arrest. Fueled in part by his problems with alcohol, he was later charged with indecent exposure following a concert in Miami in March 1969 and was arrested in November of that same year after causing trouble with the crew of an airplane. Nevertheless, the New Haven Incident remains one of the most famous episodes in rock history, remembered as the first time a rock-and-roll singer was arrested onstage during a performance.

HWY: An American Pastoral is a featurette by Jim Morrison, Frank Lisciandro, Paul Ferrara, and Babe Hill. Starring Morrison as a mysterious hitchhiker, it is a 52-minute experimental film in Direct Cinema style. It was shot during the spring and summer of 1969 in the Mojave Desert and in Los Angeles. In the informal 1971 interview Morrison gave to Ben Fong-Torres, Morrison states the film "was more of an exercise for me and a warm-up for something bigger." In 2009, restored and re-mastered excerpts from HWY were featured in Tom DiCillo's documentary When You're Strange. However, the complete film was not included in the Special Features on the When You're Strange DVD, and there have been no further announcements regarding a DVD release for the film. ▪️Directed by Jim Morrison, Frank Lisciandro,Paul Ferrara ▪️Starring Jim Morrison ▪️Language English ⭐️ IMDB 6.6/10 👉🏻 Watch Now 📌P.S.
