THE CZ26 Two years of work. Not a single extra horsepower. Underneath, it is still an SF90 Stradale — twin-turbo V8, three electric motors, 986 hp, untouched. Everything above it is new: Ferrari Design Studio, under Flavio Manzoni, redrew the entire body for one American client. The shape breaks with Ferrari's current wedge language. A strict two-box silhouette, horizontal above all else. A full-width grille with the lights concealed inside it. A truncated tail, cantilevered lamps, a diffuser stretched sideways to make the car read wider than it is. Cooling, underbody, vortex generators and air curtains were all re-engineered so the new surface actually works. Argento Veloce over Rosso Lampante. Inside, black technical fabric and 3D-printed seat inserts. Coachbuilding in its original sense: shared mechanicals, one body, one owner. THE SEAM The ridge running down the spine of this car is not a styling flourish. It is there because the metal could not be welded. Jean Bugatti built the prototype out of Elektron — ninety percent magnesium, and magnesium burns. The panels had to be riveted instead, leaving a raised fin from bonnet to tail. A year later the production car switched to aluminium. Weldable, smooth, no rivets needed. He kept the seam. Around 1,200 of them, set by hand, on a car that no longer needed a single one. When the prototype showed at the Paris Salon in October 1935, nobody who saw it recognised a failure. They saw a spine. Four were built. Three survive and are now among the most valuable objects on earth. The fourth was black, and Jean Bugatti kept that one for himself: chassis 57453, La Voiture Noire. By 1937 it had passed to Robert Benoist, who had just won Le Mans, and then to William Grover-Williams, who had won the first Monaco Grand Prix. When France fell both men escaped to England, joined the Special Operations Executive, parachuted back in, and built a sabotage network out of their pre-war racing friends. They called it Chestnut. Grover-Williams was found hiding in a stable at Benoist's estate in August 1943 and executed at Sachsenhausen, weeks before the war ended. Benoist was taken the following year and executed at Buchenwald. The car went missing as they did. Bugatti says the trail ends in 1938; other historians put it in a Bordeaux hangar until 1941. Nobody has seen it since. Somewhere there may still be a black car with a line of rivets down its spine, marking a problem that stopped existing ninety years ago. @motor · 1936 bugatti type 57sc atlantic
