The 2027/28 season will be the last in the historic building of the main theater in Nuremberg After the end of the season, the historic theater building on Richard-Wagner-Platz will be completely closed for several years for a major renovation. By the start of the 2028/2029 theater season, the opera, ballet, and concert ensembles will move to a new building on the site of the Congress Hall (Kongresshalle). Construction of the new theater complex is currently in full swing. In the spring of 2026, the roof installation over the new building was completed, and according to the city, the project, costing around 300 million euros, is proceeding exactly on schedule and without exceeding the budget. The new theater will appear in the inner courtyard of the Congress Hall. It will house a modern auditorium with 800 seats, the main stage, and an orchestra pit. The building itself will be connected to the historic Congress Hall at six points. At the same time, the historic part of the Congress Hall is not being made to look "brand new." On the contrary – architects are preserving its authentic appearance: walls are not plastered or painted, and all modern utilities are left exposed to emphasize the history of this building from the National Socialist era that was never completed. More than 7,000 m² of workshops, studios, and rehearsal spaces for independent artists will also be created here. Interest in the project is so great that after the open day in July, the city decided to make free guided tours of the construction site on Sundays a permanent fixture. 📸 Staatstheater Nürnberg 💬 Nuremberg’s Top Events

Where to go on the weekend If it seems like you have already seen all the beautiful lakes and pools of Bavaria, it is time to discover Felsenbad Pottenstein. It is one of the most unusual places for swimming in Franconian Switzerland — the pool is literally built into the rocks. Felsenbad opened back in 1926 and is considered one of the oldest open-air pools in Bavaria. After reconstruction, it was transformed into a natural pool: the water here is purified naturally through a special zone with aquatic plants, without the use of chlorine. The main feature of this place is the atmosphere. Above the pool rises the almost 70-meter high rock Finkenstein, surrounded by dense forest, and nearby is a cozy beer garden. It feels as if you are swimming not in a pool, but in a real mountain lake. On the premises there is a children's zone, changing rooms and showers. What to combine with the trip: • take a walk through the old town Pottenstein; • climb to the castle Burg Pottenstein, where a historical festival is taking place this weekend; • ride a boat on the lake Schöngrundsee. 📍 Felsenbad Pottenstein 📅 daily, 11-19:00 💰 4,50 € 💬 Nuremberg’s Top Events

Bardentreffen – the main musical event of the summer From July 30th to August 2nd, the historic center of Nuremberg will once again transform into a large concert venue. This year, the Bardentreffen is celebrating two anniversaries: 50 years of the festival itself, and 450 years since the death of Hans Sachs – the famous Nuremberg Meistersinger, in whose honor the festival was created in 1976. The main feature is: admission is completely free. Over four days, dozens of musicians from all over the world will perform on eight stages in the city center, ranging from folk and singer-songwriter music to rock, jazz, soul, electronic music, and world music. The festival attracts approximately 200,000 visitors annually, making it one of the largest free music festivals in Germany. Concerts will take place in the Hauptmarkt, Lorenzer Platz, Sebalder Platz, Insel Schütt, the ruins of Katharinenkloster, and other atmospheric locations in the Old Town. Some performances will also be broadcast live by BR. Nuremberg will become even greener Nuremberg has had the Masterplan Freiraum — a program for the development of parks, green zones, and public spaces — in effect for over 10 years. Its goal is to make the city more comfortable, adapt it to climate change, and create more places for relaxation near home. The project started in 2014. For the first five years, the city invested 5 million euros per year in green infrastructure; the program continues today. What is changing: More greenery New parks, updating existing areas, and transforming underutilized places into relaxation zones. More trees and shade Greening helps the city cope with heat. Closer to water Developing zones along rivers and bodies of water for walking. Green routes Connecting parks and natural areas with pedestrian and bicycle paths. More nature Creating flowering areas and conditions for preserving biodiversity. During the program, dozens of projects have been implemented: updating parks, creating small green zones, and developing individual districts. By 2024, 14 major projects and 4 development concepts were completed. Source 💬 Nuremberg’s Top Events

Here's a brief overview of the events in Nuremberg this week: 📌 Starting in 2027, VGN plans to simplify its fare system, eliminate some of the familiar ticket types, and gradually transition to a digital format for selling tickets. 📌 Keanu Reeves, the American actor, visited Nuremberg to attend the opening of the first personal exhibition in Germany of his partner, the artist Alexandra Grant. 📌 The Cinecittà cinema will install the world's largest LED screen, measuring 30x16 meters with a resolution of 8K+, which will provide a brighter image and higher contrast. 📌 Dangerous blue-green algae have been detected in Kleiner Dutzendteich lake, so authorities recommend against swimming and keeping pets away from the water. 📌 A severe hailstorm destroyed part of the vegetable crop in the largest agricultural area near Nuremberg, and some farmers say the season is already lost for them. 📌 The Francesco ice cream cafe in Nuremberg has been included in the ranking of the most beautiful ice cream cafes in Europe, thanks to its unusual interior and original design. 📌 A new phase of the Masterplan Freiraum program has begun in Nuremberg: by 2027, the city will invest 38.3 million euros in the creation of parks, green spaces, and public areas. 📌 Construction work on the Schocken Carré residential and commercial complex continues at Aufseßplatz, resulting in temporary restrictions on traffic for cars, trams, cyclists, and pedestrians. 📌 Following criticism of the new electricity meters, N-ERGIE is preparing a simplified version of their installation, which should make the transition easier for residents. 💬 Nuremberg’s Top Events
Volksbad Renovation Costs Increase Again, Project Delayed It seems that the residents of Nuremberg will have to wait even longer for the reopening of the historic Volksbad. The city has announced that the cost of the renovation has increased from the initial 56 million euros to 90-100 million euros, and the reopening of the famous complex is now planned for no earlier than the second half of 2027. Why did this happen? 🔹 During the work on the building, which is over 100 years old, numerous hidden problems were discovered, ranging from missing foundations to serious structural damage. 🔹 The restoration of the architectural monument turned out to be much more complex than expected. In addition, the prices for construction work and materials have risen sharply. 🔹 Further delays were caused by the contractor who was unable to complete the interior finishing of the historic rooms. The contract had to be terminated, and a new company had to be found. Despite this, the city is not abandoning the project. The authorities have already decided to complete the renovation in order to return one of Nuremberg's most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings to the city. As a reminder, Volksbad, which opened in 1914, was one of the most modern public swimming pools in Germany at the time and remains one of Nuremberg's architectural gems. It closed in 1994 after a long period of declining visitor numbers. After the renovation, the complex will once again feature swimming pools, a sauna, a wellness area, and public spaces.
