Alaverdi Monastery in Georgia! 3️⃣ In the sixth century, a group of ascetics known as the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers arrived in Georgia from Mesopotamia to strengthen the country's young Christianity. One of them, Joseph, known in Georgia as Joseph of Alaverdi, settled in this remote valley as a hermit. He founded a small monastery there, preached to the local mountaineers, and was buried at the site. His tomb remains in the monastery to this day. The cathedral was built in 1010, during the reign of King Kvirike III of Kakheti. Kakheti was then an independent kingdom, soon to be absorbed into the united Georgian realm, and the cathedral was a statement of royal ambition. The architect is unknown, but the school of building belongs to the great flowering of Georgian church architecture that also produced Svetitskhoveli and Bagrati. Alaverdi stood on the edge of the Georgian world, exposed to raids from the mountains and from Persia. In the sixteenth century, when Persian shah Abbas I ravaged Kakheti, the monastery suffered notable damage. The monastery was also an academic center with a scriptorium and school of theology and calligraphy. Under Soviet rule it functioned as a museum while religious life was suppressed, but after Georgia regained independence in 1991 the monastery was fully reactivated and its active today once again! 🥰 Alaverdi is also known for its vine. Kakheti is Georgia's wine heartland, and the monastery has revived the ancient Georgian tradition of qvevri winemaking, fermenting and aging wine in huge clay vessels buried in the ground. The monks maintain their own or wine cellar beside the cathedral, where you can taste amber wines made from Rkatsiteli and other native grapes in the same way Georgian monks have made them for well over a thousand years 🍷 #yapping
