Nine million properties sit empty, [0:14] blighting city streets and turning some rural communities into ghost towns. So [0:21] what do these crumbling houses say about Japan's existential crisis and its aging, [0:26] shrinking population? And could a new breed of homeowners, young, [0:33] foreign and eager for a bargain, help to solve the problem? [0:44] With me today is our Tokyo correspondent, Shaimaa Khalil. Hi, Shaimaa, how are you? [0:49] I'm good, I'm good. It's so good to speak to you, Lucy. [0:51] Shaimaa, lovely to see you. Now, if I'm out and about in a big city in like Tokyo or [0:57] Osaka or Kyoto or even on the countryside, am I going to see some of these abandoned homes? [1:02] Yes, and some of them are more obvious than others. So if you're in the countryside, [1:06] for example, there are homes where nature has pretty much taken over. So that's a very obvious [1:13] sign of an abandoned home. I think here In Tokyo, for example, there are also obvious older ones, [1:18] but if you're like me and you're a big, avid home programmes fan and you walk around looking at [1:25] houses and wondering how people live inside them, some will be more obvious to you. And then [1:32] others are just so deceptive. You walk around and they look perfectly normal, [1:35] but you find out from a broker or real estate agent or those who bought them that they've [1:40] been abandoned for years and years and years. So some are more obvious than others, for sure. [1:45] And the obvious ones, it's obvious because they're decaying and decrepit [1:51] or they have sort of, you know, foliage growing out of them. How can you tell? [1:55] Exactly. They're in really bad, they're in a really bad state. They're pretty much falling apart. [2:00]
