We’ve recommended Georgy Kuleshov’s project once before — and we’ve been following it ever since. So today, no lengthy intro: our friends have released an episode we’d like to highlight. A look at World War I through the lives of emperors and kings who knew each other personally. Nicholas II, Wilhelm II, and George V were relatives. They met, exchanged letters, vacationed together, and called each other “Willy,” “Nikki,” and “Georgie.” Then they found themselves leading nations dragged into one of the most devastating wars in history. • Could they have stopped the war? • To what extent did monarchs still control events — and when did events begin controlling them? • And how did a war that began under emperors, kaisers, and kings end up burying nearly the entire old European order? The result is a powerful episode on World War I through the eyes of royalty: family ties, personal correspondence, archival footage, maps, and documents.
