Tying this concept to those taking H1/H2 Geography, the problem right now is that most of the world still follows a linear economy — where we extract, produce, consumer, dispose. Instead of a circular economy — where we try to keep the resources in use for as long as possible by repairing, reusing, reducing and recycling so that it does not end up in the landfill. This allows us to still consume without having to constantly extract new resources. That's how we can "move the date" of Earth Overshoot Day further in the year.

In fact, if all the people around the world lived like Singaporeans, our Earth Overshoot Day would land on February 2023. Of course I understand it is more nuanced than that as we are a small country that's reliant on imported resources, thus naturally our carbon footprint will be higher. But, that does not discount the fact that we do have a large consumerism culture (e.g., blind boxes, fast fashion clothes, puffer bags etc.) The Earth Overshoot Day been occurring earlier since the 1970s, despite multiple attempts to promote sustainable development (from the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 to the Paris Agreement in 2015, as well as the annual Conference of the Parties (COP) climate change summits) and we are indeed facing the repercussion of unsustainable consumption (i.e. impacts of climate change). So food for thought, do you think that such a trend is concerning?

Introducing Earth Overshoot Day, a concept that was actually first introduced to me by my secondary school Geography teacher — it marks the day that we use up ALL of our resource budget for the year. (yes I am using em dash, and no I did not use ChatGPT to generate this, it's just called proper usage of punctuation for those AI police out there) July 30th (which was just a few days ago), is this year's Earth Overshoot Day. What this means is that beyond this day, whatever we are consuming will be considered an "ecological debt" — rate of consumption > rate of resource regeneration.
