🌿 A thought as I prepare for Monday... One year ago, I taught a class called Peacefully Dangerous. Looking back, I still believe much of what we talked about. But over the past year, something has shifted. We've explored trusts, trusteeship, authorship, self-governance, writing, and intentional living. As I looked back over all of those conversations, I realized they all seemed to be pointing toward the same question: What is power, really? Most people think power is found in titles, institutions, money, or control. I don't think it is. On Monday night, I'd like to share where this journey has brought me—and why I believe peace is not weakness, self-governance is one of the greatest forms of strength, and the most powerful people are often quietly building rather than constantly defending. Sometimes the strongest position isn't the one that wins every argument... It's the one that no longer needs to live in constant defense. If you don’t know your rights… you don’t have them. Not because they don’t exist. But because they’re never brought forward. Rights are not self-executing. They don’t operate on their own. They must be known… and they must be asserted. Otherwise, something else steps in. Administration. Process replaces principle. Procedure replaces protection. And before long, what should have been a boundary… becomes something you’re expected to comply with. This is why the Bill of Rights matters. By 1791, the people had already experienced power—both under a king and under their own new government. They weren’t guessing. They knew exactly what needed to be restrained. There are a lot of people right now who have formed a Private Members Agreement… but quietly hesitate when it comes time to actually use it. Not because they don’t believe in it… but because somewhere in the back of their mind they’re wondering: “What happens if I actually step forward with this?” That hesitation is more common than people admit. And it doesn’t come from nowhere. But here’s what often hasn’t been brought fully into view: The right of private association is not something new. It’s not something fringe. It’s not something that exists in a gray area. It is woven into the very fabric of this country. From the principles expressed in the Declaration of Independence… to the structure of early union under the Articles of Confederation… to the foundational protections carried forward into the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights… the ability of people to associate, assemble, and operate in the private has always been part of the design. This week, we’re stepping directly into that: Private Association — what it is, where it comes from, and how to begin approaching it with clarity instead of hesitation. This coming Monday night we step into Week 3 of our series: The Acts that Secure Title. So far we’ve explored something most people never hear explained clearly… How title and use became separated, and how that separation eventually gave rise to trusts. But once that separation existed, a new question naturally followed. What happens when the person who holds intention is not present to speak? Maybe they are traveling. Maybe they are sick. Maybe they simply aren't there when a decision needs to be made. And sometimes… someone dies. This is where wills enter the story. Most people only hear the phrase Last Will and Testament and assume a will is something written at the end of life. But historically a will is something much broader. A will is simply the expression of intention — written in such a way that it can continue speaking even when the person who formed that intention is not present. When intention is clear, responsibility can continue peacefully. When intention is unclear… confusion usually follows. On Monday night we’ll explore: • Where wills actually came from • Why equity recognized expressed intention • How written intention stabilizes responsibility • And why learning to express your will clearly is one of the most practical things a person can do.
