Malaysian Chinese Music & Performing Arts Research Salon Series (3) Singing Our Story: The Malaysian Chinese Art Song from the 1950s to Today The Malaysian Chinese art song has been performed since Independence, yet its story remains largely untold. Emerging in the 1950s, the genre weaves Western classical music together with Chinese and local Malay influences, reflecting the layered, coexisting identities of Malaysia's Chinese community. Drawing on fieldwork interviews, archival documents, and competition records, this talk traces how the genre evolved across changing socio-political landscapes over seven decades, and asks what its future might hold. Music education has long been dominated by Western classical music in the United States and many other countries. However, rising cultural diversity worldwide and greater access to global cultures through the internet and social media have made curricular reform essential. In this presentation, I share my ongoing teaching and research advocating for culturally diversified music curricula. I showcase a curricular reform in the undergraduate music education program at my university.
