They had a butter section with regional origins highlighted and astounding price range. I realized I had missed something important about butter when I saw butter for one Euro, butter for five Euros, and butter for ten Euros. It was so amazing. They sold liters of new wine for one Euro. It came in a plastic bottle like Coke, and it was completely delightful. The grocery in Rome is one of the first places I want to return to when I go back to Europe. It took a hold of my imagination and made me a cook.

  • The Italian grocery store remains the best place I have ever seen for buying food. Cooking for my friends in Italy was key to my passion for cooking today. The Italian grocery store in Trastevere is cemented in my memory for the smell of bread, basil, and BO.

  • I ordered a chorri pollo to go. (Imagine Mexican chickens playing polo...) I struck up conversation with the waiter from Chaipas. He assures me that Santa Anna is a hero of Mexico, that pulque is impossible to procure in Estados Unidos, and that Jalesco is the state I must see. Delightful. I ask about Santa Anna; why is he great? He doesn't know, but is emphatic that all Mexicans love him.

TIL the title "Admiral of the Great Navy of Nebraska" is an honour granted by the US state of Nebraska. Nebraska has no navy, and is also the furthest state from the ocean, being triple-landlocked. The office does, however, grant its holders command of "all tadpoles and goldfish". [Source]

  • My teaching habit is liberal. I taught Protestants for ten years, and I wasn't sectarian. My internet teaching is otherwise, which is comfortable and offers different opportunities. Yet, I would rather publish an ecumenical textbook I can pitch to Protestants. It will remain critical of classical liberalism, which is the most ironic thing.

  • Ive got 3 or 4 times as many students this year. That makes a huge difference to me. I'll be publishing a political science textbook just for my students, and make a different edition for Tall Men Books. I am eager to record my classes and market them.

  • We waited and waited. Then, the captain came on the PA and said the young lady copilot had lost an IPad that contained all the paperwork necessary for the flight. I've never heard that one before.

  • AM is a first rate professor with excellent taste and valuable instincts.

  • Me: I love Alabama. Daughter: Papa, you say that about every state!

  • Me: Do you remember why they call it Lookout Mountain? Daughter: Because, if you don't look out, you'll run into it!

  • That was the most intense road trip ever.

  • I submitted two new books to the printer last night. Excelsior. Onward and upward!

  • In two days, I did everything left in my power to improve my house. I am satisfied.

  • I hid an electric wire with a box on the wall.
