Difference Between Normality and Molarity Molarity (M) and Normality (N) are two different measures of solution concentration: *Molarity (M)* - Defines the number of moles of solute per liter of solution (mol/L) - Based on the molecular weight of the solute - Used for reactions where the number of moles is important (e.g., stoichiometric calculations) *Normality (N)* - Defines the number of equivalents of solute per liter of solution (eq/L) - Based on the equivalent weight of the solute (related to reaction capacity) - Used for acid-base reactions, redox reactions, or when equivalent weights are relevant Key differences: - Molarity is based on molecular weight, while Normality is based on equivalent weight - Molarity is used for stoichiometric calculations, while Normality is used for reaction capacity - Molarity is expressed in moles per liter (mol/L), while Normality is expressed in equivalents per liter (eq/L) In summary: - Use Molarity (M) for reactions involving moles - Use Normality (N) for reactions involving equivalents (e.g., acid-base, redox) Note: For some substances (like HCI), the equivalent weight is equal to the molecular weight, making Molarity and Normality equivalent. However, this is not always the case (e.g., H2SO4).
