  • What happened in China this week: 1. CXMT, the newly listed memory chip maker, has ousted Tencent as the most valuable company in China by market cap. 2. Tencent stock fell 8% this week following its Q2 results. Free cash flow turned negative, and investors are concerned about the ROI on its AI capex spending. 3. JD.com's Q2 revenue dipped 2.9% on e-commerce softness. Stock down 15% this week. 4. Lenovo is cashing in on the AI boom by selling server computers. Earnings grew 176% and the stock soared 21% this week. 5. China's biggest foundry, SMIC, posted 262% profit growth, and utilisation rate rose to 93.7%. 6. Robotics company Unitree is listing in Shanghai. The IPO was oversubscribed by 8,000x. For more insights, read [Premium]: https://growthdragons.substack.com/p/growth-dragons-weekly-cxmt-becomes

AI stocks got hammered in June and July. SanDisk fell more than 50% from peak to trough. Yet the S&P 500 barely moved, and by August it was back at new highs. Is the drawdown over, or is this the calm before a bigger fall? Read more: https://finbiteinsights.substack.com/p/s-and-p-500-hits-new-highs-bull-or

Reports have emerged this week that Temasek is planning to buy Samsung and SK Hynix. Both stocks jumped nearly 10% on the news. Here's the catch. Temasek actually first invested back in 2024, so this isn't new money chasing a hot trend. Any increase would be part of its strategic plan to grow AI holdings from 6% to 15% of its portfolio over 5 years. What does this mean for us retail investors? https://drwealth.com/temasek-buys-sk-hynix-and-samsung-should-you-follow/

AIA, Prudential and FWD shares fell on China's 20% levy on offshore insurance income. Two of them look undervalued, but only one is worth a closer look now. Read more [Premium]: https://growthdragons.substack.com/p/hong-kong-insurer-stocks-fell-on

In 2010, DBS sold its fund arm to Nikko, and built its wealth franchise around distribution instead. 16 years later, UOB just made a similar move, selling UOB Asset Management to Allianz for S$555 million and locking in a S$330 million gain. Same logic, different bank. Meanwhile, OCBC is the odd one out, still keeping both sides in house through Lion Global and Great Eastern. Is UOB following a proven playbook, or is OCBC's full suite approach the one that pays off? https://drwealth.com/uob-sold-its-funds-unit-for-s555-million-banking-on-the-customer-not-the-product/

🏎️ You'd know it's a Ferrari before you even see it. That screaming V12 is practically a signature. So what happens when Ferrari builds one without it? Ferrari's first EV launched at €550k, got mocked for its design, then sold out its entire 2026 allocation in 6 weeks anyway. Reminds us of when quartz watches were supposed to kill mechanical ones. They didn't. They became more desirable. Is Ferrari's combustion engine about to follow the same path? And is the stock actually cheap right now? 🔐 A powerful AI got “too good” at hacking. Cybersecurity stocks crashed. Then the story flipped completely. CrowdStrike, Palo Alto and Fortinet have rallied 77% to over 100% this year as companies rushed to defend against AI powered hackers. But there’s a lesser known player doing something different, hunting for weaknesses before AI powered hackers can exploit them. And it’s still trading at a fraction of what its bigger peers command. What happened in China this week 1. The US Federal Communications Commission is drafting a ban on imports of new Chinese optical transceivers. 2. Innolight and Eoptolink are the top Chinese suppliers of optical transceivers globally, and US companies can't easily wean off them. 3. Despite the ban news, both stocks actually rose this week. 4. WuXi AppTec is another good example of US pressure not working. 5. Despite being added to the Pentagon's blacklist, WuXi AppTec reported that revenue from the United States rose more than 56% year on year, and the stock is up almost 20% this week. 6. But insurers (AIA, Prudential) and banks (HSBC, StanChart) were not so lucky. China imposed a 20% tax on offshore insurance policy returns, and their share prices fell on fears of losing mainland business. 7. Same story with EV makers. China phased out older tax breaks and added a new tax on EVs, and BYD, Geely, Chery and other EV stocks fell this week as a result. 8. Haidilao launched a new burger chain called Fresh Burger. We think it's a mistake. For more insights, read [Premium]: https://growthdragons.substack.com/p/growth-dragons-weekly-us-restrictions

👀 Everyone's watching the S&P 500 and the Fed. Almost no one's watching what's been quietly built at home. Lion Global Investors has steered Singaporean money for 40 years, through every up and down most of us have lived through. Sometimes the most overlooked investment is the one closest to home. Every Singaporean priced out of a condo has had this thought: just move to JB, right? Cheaper rent, more space, same SGD paycheck. But talk to anyone doing the commute, and it's not that simple. Your parents, your gym, your favourite hawker stall, your kid's school, all still an hour away. The RTS Link helps, but it doesn't shrink the emotional distance. So is the trade worth it, or does the math only work on paper? https://drwealth.com/singapore-properties-are-too-expensive-can-living-in-malaysia-work/

What happened in China this week: 1. The U.S. banned new imports of Chinese humanoid, quadruped and other advanced robots. 2. That costs China's robotics firms a lucrative market at exactly the wrong moment, just as they move from R&D into commercialisation. 3. But China is still the factory of the world and these companies already have an enormous domestic market. The real question is whether robotics ends up as brutally competitive as EVs. 4. Europe barely has any air conditioning and the heat has changed that fast. Who benefits? Chinese makers like Midea, Haier and Gree. 5. Trip.com fined RMB5.2 billion, with the fine portion alone equal to 7.5% of its 2025 China revenue, for coercing hotels into offering their lowest prices on its platform. 6. China has tightened its grip on offshore trusts, which are now taxable. Interestingly, a handful of trust company stocks rose after the announcement. 7. Think baldness, think men. But hair loss treatment and transplants are increasingly a women's business, and China's largest chain has ridden that shift back into profit. 8. The recent AI selldown took down a hedge fund manager. And plenty of Korean retail investors too. What they had in common was leverage. Alvin learnt that one the hard way more than ten years ago. Two lessons here: https://finbiteinsights.substack.com/p/right-about-ai-wrong-about-leverage

These two weeks made China's self sufficiency in chips and AI feel very real. Memory maker CXMT rallied 466% on day one and Apple is testing its chips for its own devices. China is ramping its own immersion DUV machines capable of 7nm class chips without ASML, and Moonshot's Kimi K3 matches Claude and ChatGPT at a fraction of the cost. Three fronts, all moving at once. What happened in China this week. 1. Tencent fell 7% after analysts projected a slowdown in its mobile gaming revenue growth. No official figures until earnings on 12 Aug 2026. 2. The national team is back propping up the stock market. This time they loaded up on the ChinaAMC Star 50 ETF, which drew record inflows. Why this ETF and why now? 3. Zhongji Innolight is the world's largest optical interconnect supplier, converting electrical signals into light and back again as networks lean ever harder on optical fibre. It is seeking to raise HK$55 billion in a Hong Kong IPO, the largest since Alibaba. 4. Zhipu AI has a 1GW data centre running entirely on domestic Chinese AI chips. Self sufficiency is no longer just talk. 5. The European Union has hit AliExpress with a €550 million penalty under the Digital Services Act, the largest issued under that regulation so far. But the louder question is Alibaba's AI spending. For more insights, read on [Premium]: https://growthdragons.substack.com/p/growth-dragons-weekly-tencent-falls
