Respected Sir/Madam, This is an urgent representation requesting the Government to revise the upper age limit for the UPSC Engineering Services Examination (ESE) from 30 years to 32 years. The UPSC Civil Services Examination allows General Category candidates up to 32 years of age, whereas qualified engineers appearing for ESE are restricted to 30 years. The situation requires serious reconsideration. Even years after the COVID-19 disruption, thousands of qualified engineering graduates continue to struggle for stable employment and Government opportunities. Recruitment opportunities are limited, vacancies in many examinations are highly competitive and candidates get very few meaningful chances before crossing the existing age limit. At the same time, competition has increased significantly. Engineers also spend four years completing their professional degree and many subsequently spend years preparing for GATE, PSUs, State Engineering Services, UPSC ESE and other technical recruitments. Increasing the ESE upper age limit from 30 to 32 years will NOT dilute merit or examination standards. Candidates will still have to clear the same rigorous Preliminary Examination, Main Examination and Personality Test purely on merit. It will simply give deserving engineers two additional years to compete for an opportunity to serve the Government of India. Considering the post-COVID employment situation, increasing competition, limited recruitment opportunities and the professional nature of engineering education, reviewing the present age limit is now the NEED OF THE HOUR. We therefore strongly request the Government to: 1. Increase the General Category upper age limit for UPSC ESE from 30 to 32 years. 2. Implement the revised age limit from ESE 2027. 3. If a permanent amendment cannot be completed immediately, provide a one-time two-year age relaxation for ESE 2027 and simultaneously review the policy for future examinations. The ESE 2027 notification is scheduled for 16 September 2026. Therefore, this matter deserves immediate consideration BEFORE the notification is finalised. Thousands of engineering aspirants may lose their final opportunity merely because of the existing two-year age difference. Respected Sir/Madam, I respectfully request ISRO and the Department of Space to reconsider the reduction of the upper age limit from 35 years to 28 years for Scientist/Engineer ‘SC’ recruitment and restore it to 35 years. This seven-year reduction is not a minor administrative change. It has completely removed thousands of qualified and dedicated engineering aspirants between the ages of 28 and 35 from even getting an opportunity to compete. ISRO vacancies are limited and recruitment is not conducted regularly for every engineering discipline. Whenever only 30, 50 or 100 posts are advertised, thousands of candidates apply. It is practically impossible for every capable candidate to be selected in a single recruitment cycle. A candidate may miss selection by a small margin, may not receive a vacancy in the relevant engineering branch, or may have to wait several years for the next suitable notification. Reducing the age limit to 28 years means that such candidates are not only denied selection once, but are permanently denied every future opportunity to compete. Candidates above 28 years are not less qualified, less intelligent or less capable. Many of them possess greater technical knowledge, professional experience and maturity. Restoring the upper age limit to 35 years would not compromise merit because every candidate would still be required to clear the same examination, interview and prescribed selection standards. The impact of the COVID-19 period should also be considered. Many aspirants lost valuable years because of delayed academic sessions, postponed examinations, reduced recruitment opportunities, financial difficulties and other circumstances beyond their control. India repeatedly speaks about youth empowerment, scientific development, skill utilisation and creating opportunities for qualified engineers. However, suddenly excluding technically qualified youth during their productive years sends the opposite message. Joining ISRO is not merely a job aspiration for many candidates. It is a dream to contribute to India’s scientific and space programme. Aspirants invest years of effort, money and preparation. Their entire opportunity should not be permanently closed merely because thousands of candidates were competing for a very small number of posts. I am not requesting guaranteed employment or relaxation in merit. I am only requesting a fair opportunity to compete. I therefore sincerely request the competent authority to: 1. Restore the upper age limit to 35 years for Scientist/Engineer ‘SC’ recruitment. 2. Grant a one-time seven-year age relaxation in the upcoming recruitment. 3. Provide transitional protection to candidates who were eligible under the earlier age limit. 4. Consider the recruitment opportunities lost during the COVID-19 period. 5. Review the policy after considering limited vacancies, irregular recruitment cycles and discipline-wise recruitment gaps. Aspirants cannot control the number of vacancies, frequency of notifications or administrative delays. Therefore, the entire burden of these circumstances should not be placed upon them by permanently excluding them after the age of 28. I request ISRO and the Department of Space to treat this matter with urgency, fairness and sensitivity and restore the upper age limit to 35 years.
