14 August 1947. Gandhi walked past burnt Hindu homes in Calcutta. Jinnah and Mountbatten spoke in Karachi. In Srinagar, a Pakistan flag was pulled down from the Post Office. At midnight, Nehru declared India’s entry into a new age. Freedom arrived with shankh dhwani, Partition, refugees and a warning from Gandhi that if communal hatred continued, the freedom we had won would not survive. While India stood on the threshold of Independence, Punjab was bleeding. On 13 August 1947, a train stopped at Riazabad near Lahore. Hindu and Sikh passengers were killed. Women and girls were abducted. Punjab’s censorship kept such reports out of newspapers. Abdul Ghaffar Khan, devastated by the NWFP joining Pakistan, accused Congress of handing the province to the Muslim League “on a platter.” In Karachi, Jinnah hosted a royal banquet.
