While India stood on the threshold of Independence, Punjab was bleeding. On 13 August 1947, a train stopped at Riazabad near Lahore. Hindu and Sikh passengers were killed. Women and girls were abducted. Punjab’s censorship kept such reports out of newspapers. Abdul Ghaffar Khan, devastated by the NWFP joining Pakistan, accused Congress of handing the province to the Muslim League “on a platter.” In Karachi, Jinnah hosted a royal banquet.
