What Are Phishing, Smishing, and Vishing? What's the Difference? In today's digital world, cybercriminals are constantly changing the ways they trick people into giving away sensitive information. Let's look at three of the most common social engineering attacks and how they differ: ➡️ Phishing Phishing is a scam that is usually carried out through email. Attackers pretend to be trusted organizations such as banks, social media platforms (Facebook, Telegram, etc.), or even coworkers. They send emails containing fake links designed to steal your passwords, banking details, or other sensitive information. ➡️ Smishing Smishing is a type of phishing that comes through text messages (SMS). 📱 SMS + Phishing = Smishing For example, you may receive a message saying: "Your bank account has been suspended. Click this link to restore access." Or: "Congratulations! You've won a prize." These messages often contain malicious links that lead to fake websites created to steal your personal information. ➡️ Vishing Vishing is a scam carried out through phone calls. 📞 Voice + Phishing = Vishing A scammer may call you pretending to be a bank employee, telecom representative, or government official. They try to convince you to reveal your One-Time Password (OTP), PIN, or other confidential information. All three methods rely on manipulating emotions—usually fear ("Your account will be closed immediately!") or excitement ("You've won a reward!")—to pressure victims into sharing sensitive information without thinking carefully. 🛡️ How Can You Protect Yourself? ✔️ Don't rush. If a message or call creates a sense of urgency, pause and think before taking any action. ✔️ Be cautious with links. Never click suspicious links from unknown sources. Always verify their authenticity first. ✔️ Remember the golden rule. Banks, telecom companies, and legitimate organizations will NEVER ask for your OTP, PIN, password, or other confidential information via phone calls, SMS, or email.
