EPILEPSY IN FOCUS Many Cases of Epilepsy Can Be Prevented! 📌According to the World Health Organization, up to 25% of epilepsy cases are preventable. Prevention is a powerful public health tool. EPILEPSY IN FOCUS Epilepsy Signs and Symptoms — Recognize the Warning Signs! 📌 Epilepsy is characterized by recurrent seizures caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. 📌Seizures can look very different from person to person and recognizing the signs can save lives. The common signs and symptoms of epilepsy include: • Sudden, uncontrolled jerking movements of the arms and legs (convulsions). • Temporary confusion, staring spells, or loss of awareness. • Loss of consciousness or fainting. • Strange sensations not limited to ingling, dizziness, unusual smells, or visual disturbances. • Sudden emotional changes such as fear or anxiety without clear reason. • Stiff muscles or sudden collapse. Seizures may last from a few seconds to a few minutes and recovery can involve fatigue, confusion, or headache. ✨ Awareness protects lives. 💙 EMSA-AA | More than a Student! 🧡 SCOPH-AA | Orange Hugs!
EPILEPSY IN FOCUS 📢 Epilepsy is Treatable , Access to Care Saves Lives! 📌 According to the World Health Organization, up to 70% of people living with epilepsy could become seizure-free with appropriate treatment. 📌 Yet in many low-income countries, about 3 out of 4 people do not receive the treatment they need. 📌 This treatment gap is a major public health failure. • Preventable seizures increase risk of injury and early death. • Untreated epilepsy limits education and employment opportunities. • Lack of access worsens social stigma and economic hardship. • Primary health care systems can effectively manage most cases , if resources are available. ✨ Treatment is not a privilege , it is a right. 💙 EMSA-AA | More than a Student! 🧡 SCOPH-AA | Orange Hugs!
EPILEPSY IN FOCUS Epilepsy is a Global Public Health Concern! 📌 According to the WHO, around 50 million people worldwide 🌎 live with epilepsy, and an estimated 5.2 per 1000 people in Ethiopia, making it one of the most common neurological diseases globally 📌 Nearly 80% of people with epilepsy live in low- and middle-income countries, where access to treatment is often limited. The public health impact of epilepsy is clear: • Causes recurrent seizures that can lead to injuries, disability, and reduced quality of life. • Associated with increased risks of anxiety, depression, and premature mortality. • Up to 70% of people could live seizure-free with proper treatment , yet many lack access to care. • Social stigma and discrimination often limit education, employment, and social participation. Together, let’s build health systems that diagnose early, treat effectively, and fight stigma! ✨ A healthy society supports people living with epilepsy. 💙 EMSA-AA | More than a Student! 🧡 SCOPH-AA | Orange Hugs!
