EPILEPSY IN FOCUS Epilepsy Signs and Symptoms — Recognize the Warning Signs! 📌 Epilepsy is characterized by recurrent seizures caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. 📌Seizures can look very different from person to person and recognizing the signs can save lives. The common signs and symptoms of epilepsy include: • Sudden, uncontrolled jerking movements of the arms and legs (convulsions). • Temporary confusion, staring spells, or loss of awareness. • Loss of consciousness or fainting. • Strange sensations not limited to ingling, dizziness, unusual smells, or visual disturbances. • Sudden emotional changes such as fear or anxiety without clear reason. • Stiff muscles or sudden collapse. The public health impact of epilepsy is clear: • Causes recurrent seizures that can lead to injuries, disability, and reduced quality of life. • Associated with increased risks of anxiety, depression, and premature mortality. • Up to 70% of people could live seizure-free with proper treatment , yet many lack access to care. • Social stigma and discrimination often limit education, employment, and social participation.
