EXPLAINING THE ISRAEL-IRAN CONFLICT On 28 February 2026, Israel and the US assassinated Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in an effort to force regime change in Iran. 😱 Ayatollah Khamenei’s theocratic regime represents an existential threat to Israel. Regime change in Iran will eliminate a significant regional threat for Israel and allow it to have a more stable and secure existence.  CONTEXT: Main reasons for the Israel-Iran conflict 1️⃣ IRAN’S SECURITY THREAT: Iran’s support of Hamas, the terrorist group threatening Israel’s security Iran significantly contributes to the greatest security threat that Israel faces by funding, training and arming Hamas terrorists. Not only does Iran provide approximately $70 million a year to Hamas in funding, it has also trained militants to build and deploy suicide bombs. Iran supports Palestinian armed groups as part of its regional security policy to occupy and contain Israel, which it perceives as its greatest security threat in the region.  2️⃣ REGIME CHANGE IN IRAN: Rise of theocratic state in Iran  The rise of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1979 resulted in the severance of previously good ties between Israel and Iran and ushered in a new period of hostility.  3️⃣ GEOPOLITICAL CHANGES IN THE REGION The 1991 Gulf War which severely weakened the once-powerful Iraq resulted in Israel and Iran increasingly competing to become the regional power in the Middle East.  4️⃣ OCCUPATION OF PALESTINE: Iran’s anger at Israel’s occupation of Palestine The new leader Ayatollah Khomeini ‘brought about a new worldview that predominantly championed Islam and argued for standing up to “arrogant” world powers and their regional allies, who would oppress others – including Palestinians – to serve their own interests.’ Indeed, Israel’s occupation of the Gaza Strip since 1967 has accompanied several brief but violent wars against Hamas, culminating in the deaths of many Palestinian civilians, as well as a dehumanizing policy of land confiscation, a tight grip over the strip’s water and electricity supply as well as strict control over Palestinians’ movements in and out of the strip.  ➡️How valid is this instance of foreign intervention?⬅️ 😡 On one hand, the assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei can be argued to be a violation of international law. Israel has called it a ‘preemptive strike’, which means that the assassination was not in response to an imminent threat but meant to pre-empt an attack from Iran. Under the United Nations Charter, particularly Article (2)4, all member states are prohibited from using force against another state unless they have been attacked first, making preemptive strikes illegal. 😠 In addition, forcing regime change in Iran violates the Iranian people’s right to self-determination - the freedom to determine their own political, economic and social goals.  🙏 However, one could argue that forcing regime change in Iran is justified as the current regime under Ayatollah Khamenei is a deeply oppressive and immoral one. The Iranian government has a long and terrible track record of harshly cracking down on protestors, journalists and political dissidents - they killed more than 30,000 people in the most recent spate of protests. Regime change may actually benefit the Iranian people.  😢 Whatever the case, ensuring successful regime change in another country is extremely risky and difficult. It requires the complete incapacitation of all existing government bodies as well as the existence of a competent and united alternative government ready to lead the country. Regime change may even prove counterintuitive, if the new regime that follows in Khamenei's footsteps turns out to be more anti-Israel and anti-US.  TRY APPLYING IN THESE QNS～～ 🤔 “Foreign intervention in a country’s domestic affairs is never justifiable.” Discuss. Common misconceptions Misconception 1: Not meeting the IGP = no chance to apply SMU and NUS law is AAA/A. I know people who have AAB/A who have gotten in. I have seen (back then) 83 RP applicants get into law. Albeit super rare, this dosent mean all hope is lost. This applies to all courses - if your grade isn't perfect, just apply! what do you have to lose anyways Misconception 2: If you don't get accepted, it's over This is true. Only for girls. Not because im sexist but because guys have something called NS, which is arguably the only benefit we get from it. Guys (males) get three chances to apply so please use it wisely Misconception 3: Your portfolio is the most important thing. Yep, true, to a certain extent. But for those applying say med, law, PPE, anything with a written test/ interview, the component where most people are cut is the test/interview. Go study and prepare hard for it! use chatgpt, Reddit, scrutinise the information that the school gives u! all the best guys. In the end, everything comes down to demand and supply. You might be wayy over the IGP, and still not get in, vice versa. It depends on the competition that you are facing that year! FOR EXAMPLE (FOR EXAMPLE!!!!) if demand for comp sci drastically drops this year due to concerns over a weak job market, the IGP is lower and you might still be accepted if your IGP dosen't make the 10th percentile!

okay now that the air has cooled off, here are some tips for uni applications! For context, I applied for NUS Law, PPE, CHS and SMU Law, and i got accepted for all! Aside from that, I also was accepted into NUS College (NUSC). My IGP (indicative grade profile) was AAA/A. Tip 1: Your IGP determines whether your application into a certain course will be accepted. Each course has its own IGP. For example, Law and SMU is AAA/A. I'll drop the links to the main three's respective IGPs at the bottom! (different schools have different IGPs, even for the same course. For example, NUS psych is ABB/C and AAC/B. Tip 2: 10th and 90th percentile for IGP. For example, NTU accountancy's 90th percentile is AAA/A, and 10th percentile is BBC/B. This means the top scorers in accountancy has scored AAA/A, but there are also students on the lower end who scored BBC/B, or slightly worse. Tip 3: Diversify your applications. Even if you are for example dead set on NUS PPE, apply for SMU PLE, NUS business, econs etc. Apply overseas too! that way, even if somehow your first and second options are rejected (TOUCH WOOD), you still have a course. This applies especially for girls. Tip 4: Apply fast. Many people procrastinate and delay their applications, and they end up underestimating the time it takes to complete. it's really, really long by the way.
