Global News and Views Asian Stocks Rise as US Inflation, Tech Spur Gains Asian stocks rose, adding to a fourth week of gains, as moderating US inflation reinforced bets that the Federal Reserve will refrain from raising interest rates next month. Technology stocks extended their rebound. MSCI’s Asia Pacific equities gauge climbed 0.3%, taking its weekly advance to 2.6%. South Korea’s Kospi Index, a bellwether for the artificial intelligence trade, led the region, with Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc. taking their gains for the week to more than 14%. Advances in Asia on Friday came as investors redoubled their bets on the AI trade after last month’s selloff, sending MSCI’s All Country World Index to a record high this week. The S&P 500 Index closed at an all-time high Thursday, while the Nasdaq 100 climbed more than 1% to its highest level since late June. Elsewhere, Treasuries held Thursday’s advance after US wholesale inflation cooled in July. The yield on the rate-sensitive two-year note was little changed at 4.15%, after falling six basis points in the prior session. Money markets are now pricing in about a 35% chance of a Fed rate increase in September. Trump Pivots to Economic Squeeze of ‘Entrenched’ Iran Regime The US military campaign against Iran has failed to force the regime to capitulate, so the Trump administration is relying on economic sanctions and a naval blockade to stifle Iran's oil exports. The US is betting that suffocating economic pressure, dubbed "Maximum Pressure", will lead to the collapse of the Iranian regime, with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright saying Iran's economy is getting "strangled". The US has added thousands of sanctions on Tehran since 2018, but some analysts argue that this approach is unlikely to produce meaningful political change, as 47 years of sanctions haven't broken Tehran's will. Oil Holds Drop While Hormuz Deal Stalls and Ship Attacks Persist Oil held a decline as traders monitored efforts toward a deal that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while fresh attacks on tankers and energy infrastructure kept the market on edge. Brent traded near $87 a barrel after falling 2.2% in the previous session, while West Texas Intermediate was around $81. Iran and Oman have yet to reach an accord to reopen the crucial waterway, after optimism earlier in the week that an agreement was within reach. Despite the impasse, crude continues to exit the Persian Gulf, often on tankers sailing with their transponders switched off, although vessels transiting Hormuz face persistent threats. Abu Dhabi National Oil Co., among the most successful in moving barrels out of the region, said two more of its ships were attacked late Thursday, according to state news agency WAM, underscoring the risks. Carry Traders Exploit Intervention to Rebuild Yen Shorts Every intervention to prop up the yen is also creating a fresh opportunity to sell it. The historic joint US-Japan action last month has done little to shift the forces weighing on the currency, with the yen sliding back toward 160 per dollar less than two weeks later. The key is the wide gap between interest rates in Japan and elsewhere. Investors can borrow the low-yielding yen and use the money to buy higher-yielding assets — a strategy known as the carry trade. That means when intervention pushes the yen higher, investors can get a better price to sell it. Hedge funds have halved their bearish yen bets through Aug. 4, but some investors are starting to return to carry trades funded by the currency, according to market watchers including JPMorgan Private Bank and State Street Bank & Trust. South Korean shipping companies SK Shipping Co. and H-Line Shipping Co. — both owned by private equity firm Hahn & Co. — will swap tankers and contracts to create one of the world’s largest operators of liquefied natural gas carriers. SK Shipping will receive 16 LNG vessels and their long-term contracts from H-Line in exchange for 12 tankers, their contracts and approximately $300 million in cash. The deal will turn SK into what Hahn & Co. described as the world’s third-largest operator of LNG carriers, while H-Line will become a leading tanker and bulk-shipping company in the region. The swap, part of a years-long effort to reshape Korean shipping, also comes as months of conflict in the Persian Gulf upend the energy trade and create lucrative opportunities for shipowners, charterers and traders. A large, consolidated fleet backed by long-term contracts can offer relatively predictable cash flows in an industry otherwise buffeted by sharp swings in freight rates. The swap will allow H-Line to benefit from “increased scale, operating efficiencies, and capital” at a time of geopolitical uncertainty, Hahn & Co. said. Hahn & Co. created H-Line in 2014 by acquiring Hanjin Shipping Co.’s long-term dry-bulk operations. It added Hyundai Merchant Marine Co.’s long-term dry-bulk business in 2016. Hahn & Co. then acquired about 80% of SK Shipping from SK Group in 2018 and shifted the company away from speculative spot-market operations toward vessels backed by secured, long-term contracts. US Sells 10-Year Debt at Highest Yields Since Financial Crisis A $42 billion auction of 10-year US Treasuries resulted in the highest yield for the benchmark securities since 2007, luring decent appetite from investors who’ve been demanding more compensation to finance the US government. The yield at Wednesday’s sale came in at 4.683%, the most since the global financial crisis, and just above the prevailing level seen in the market before the 1 p.m. bidding deadline in New York — a sign that demand only slightly lagged expectations. Most Treasuries ended the day little changed before yields inched lower in Asia on Thursday. It sets the scene for a 30-year sale on Thursday that is expected to take place at the highest financing rate in a quarter of a century. Inflation running above the Federal Reserve’s target and swelling budget deficits are contributing to elevated long-dated yields. Trump Reverts to Economic Squeeze of ‘Entrenched’ Iranian Regime The US military campaign against Iran has so far failed to force the regime to capitulate. The Trump administration is betting once again that suffocating economic pressure will do the job. Facing a shortfall of necessary munitions and wary of continuing an unpopular war, Trump and his top officials are returning to a familiar playbook with the regime: relying on a steady increase in economic sanctions and a naval blockade to stifle oil exports. The renewed emphasis on economic pain — it was dubbed “Maximum Pressure” in Trump’s first term — is a marked reversal for an administration that, only days earlier, had been threatening a stepped up military campaign after nearly six months of war against Tehran. While the approach failed to bring about the result President Donald Trump wanted before 2020, he and his team argue it will this time around. Source: Bloomberg
Global News and Views Asian Stocks Rise as Rate-Hike Bets Ease, Oil Dips Asian stocks rose as technology shares rallied and a subdued US inflation report eased concerns about an imminent interest-rate hike by the Federal Reserve. Brent snapped a six-day rally. MSCI’s Asia Pacific equity index rose 1%, with chipmakers Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc. the biggest contributors. South Korea’s Kospi Index rallied 3.8% to enter a technical bull market as a rebound in the artificial intelligence trade fueled a reversal from last month’s selloff. Caution lingered as Cisco Systems Inc.’s earnings failed to impress, sending its shares down 4.1% in extended trading. Cerebras Systems Inc. tumbled 17% after sales declined at its hardware business. Elsewhere, Brent dropped 1.2% to $88 a barrel. Attention was also on the yen as it traded around the key level of 160 per dollar, keeping investors on the lookout for more intervention by officials in the foreign-exchange market. Shorter-maturity Treasuries extended gains, with the two-year yield falling two basis points to 4.18% as traders pared expectations for Fed tightening. Money markets assigned less than a 50% chance of a September rate increase. US consumer prices rose 0.2% in July from a month earlier, a government report showed Wednesday, in line with economists’ forecasts, while a key underlying inflation measure matched its slowest pace since March 2021. Oil Edges Lower After Six-Day Gain With Hormuz Impasse in Focus Oil futures edged lower as traders waited for signs of progress on reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Talks between the US and Iran appear deadlocked, with Washington pressing on with a blockade of Iran's ports to raise economic pressure on Tehran. The global oil market faces a shortfall of 1.8 million barrels a day this quarter, with crude demand being eroded by higher prices. Rio Tinto Australia Aluminum Plant Gets $1.8 Billion Bailout The owners of Australia’s biggest aluminum smelter, including Rio Tinto Group, have secured a A$2.5 billion ($1.8 billion) government bailout to keep the plant operating as they grapple with high energy costs. The Tomago facility in New South Wales secured financial support from both the federal and state governments, they said in a joint statement. As part of the arrangement, Tomago Aluminium, the venture that runs the plant, will invest A$1.1 billion, and cut power consumption at times of high demand on the grid. The bailout was first reported on Wednesday, without financial details. Electricity costs have strained aluminum smelters around the world, forcing some operators to shut or reduce output, while competition has also intensified from lower-cost plants in China. Rio has previously said electricity accounts for more than 40% of Tomago’s operating costs, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pledged financial support in December, after the miner warned that soaring costs could force the plant to close when its existing power-supply contract expires later this decade. China is tackling a problem that has plagued its real estate sector for years: a ticking time bomb of expiring leases that has scuttled deals and left investors facing the risk of heavy losses. Scores of office towers, shopping malls and warehouses sit on land with dwindling lease terms, and owners could be forced to return the land to local governments when the leases expire. There has been little clarity over when — and how — property owners could extend these leases. That has been a big headache for the developers and global funds that once rushed to invest in the country’s real estate sector, prolonging a slump that has lasted more than five years. More than 1 trillion yuan ($148 billion) of non-residential property now has leases of 20 years or less, which means they have passed the halfway mark or gone beyond it, estimates Andrew Chan, the head of valuation and advisory services for Greater China at Cushman and Wakefield. Developers including Parkview Group Ltd. and New World Development Co. have struggled to sell some assets because of dwindling lease terms, according to people familiar with the matter. Global News and Views Oil Gains Before US CPI, Asian Tech Stocks Rise Crude oil climbed as traders remained wary about the prospects for a Middle East deal, tempering the mood in the run-up to crucial US inflation data. Technology shares led gains in Asian equities. Global benchmark Brent rose 0.6% to $89.44 a barrel, extending its rally to a sixth day. The advance came as the US and Iran both appeared to harden their positions in the long-deadlocked negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz, despite Pakistan’s defense minister saying the two countries are “close to some sort of arrangement.” Sentiment toward technology remained buoyant, with CoreWeave Inc. surging 16% in extended trading after booming artificial intelligence spending drove stronger-than-expected sales growth. Super Micro Computer Inc. rallied 7.6% in the post market after its revenue forecast topped estimates. The robust tech earnings helped MSCI’s Asia Pacific equities gauge advance 0.6%, with South Korea’s tech-heavy Kospi Index adding 4.1%. US equity-index futures edged higher. Oil Extends Gain on Doubts Over Hormuz Deal Despite Upbeat Tone Oil advanced for a sixth day on skepticism about the prospects for a deal that would restore energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz, despite an upbeat assessment from some officials. Brent rose above $89 a barrel after jumping around 12% over the previous five sessions, while West Texas Intermediate traded near $84. Futures have been sensitive to headlines on efforts to reopen the vital waterway, repeatedly swinging between optimism that a deal is near and indications that progress has stalled. US President Donald Trump told reporters late Tuesday that “we totally control” Hormuz and that he doesn’t trust Iran. That came after he made sweeping new demands on the Islamic Republic this week after Tehran reiterated requests for reparations as part of talks to wind down the five-month war. Ship Pays $4 Million to Skip Line to Cross Panama Canal A container ship paid $4 million to cut the line at the Panama Canal, where wait times are stretching more than a week, as vessels seek alternative routes because of the Iran war. The near-record high auction figure was paid by the owner of the vessel, the Seaspan Benefactor, according to people familiar with the matter who could not be identified because the auction data is private. Seaspan didn’t respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. While typical transits through the waterway are paid by a flat rate via reservations, the Panama Canal Authority also offers customers an auction process in order to bypass the regular queue. Shipowners are shelling out millions of dollars to use the auction workaround as the Iran war forces more congestion at the Panama Canal, which links the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific. Buyers and sellers of oil, natural gas, fertilizer and chemicals, especially those in Asia, have scrambled to find alternative routes with traffic deeply curtailed at two key Persian Gulf transit points — the Strait of Hormuz and more recently the Bab el-Mandeb. Neopanamax-size vessels, such as those carrying liquefied petroleum gas, liquefied natural gas, crude oil and refined products, without booked transit slots have to wait 10 days in line, the highest since May for Pacific-to-Atlantic transit, according to data from Argus Media. The yen has wiped out half of its rally from recent interventions by Japan and the US to boost the currency, a psychologically significant move for traders who remain on alert for further official support. Japan’s currency weakened 1% on Monday, ending the session at 159.29 per dollar and marking the worst performance among Group-of-10 peers. “Without fresh intervention, it will continue to drift lower,” said Lee Ferridge, a strategist at State Street. “It seems that the market is disappointed that we didn’t see more intervention.” Source: Bloomberg
