It's easy for people at the top to say, "It's easy. I love it. I enjoy it. Just enjoy the process." No matter the field, you'll hear the same advice. But I'm almost certain they hated every second of climbing that ladder. They hated every second of the process. Sometimes I tell my students—or anyone who asks me for advice about learning English or IELTS—to "enjoy the process." But when my speaking score was consistently around 4.5–5.0 and my peers laughed at my English, I hated it too. I say it now because I'm already at the top. Do something you hate until you start to love it. Eventually, you'll be the one at the top. #random
Many governments invest heavily in making cities more bicycle-friendly. Why is this? Is this the only solution to transport problems? In many countries, governments allocate substantial funding to developing cycling infrastructure in urban areas. This trend is primarily driven by the need to reduce traffic congestion and improve environmental sustainability. However, although encouraging cycling is an effective strategy, it is far from the only solution to urban transport challenges. A comprehensive transport system requires multiple complementary measures. The primary reason governments invest in cycling infrastructure is that it helps tackle congestion while simultaneously reducing environmental damage. As cities become increasingly populated, roads are often unable to accommodate the growing number of private vehicles, leading to severe traffic jams and excessive carbon emissions. By making cycling safer and more convenient through dedicated bike lanes and secure parking facilities, authorities encourage commuters to switch from cars to bicycles. This shift, in turn, decreases the number of vehicles on the road, thereby improving traffic flow and air quality at the same time. The Netherlands provides a compelling example of this approach. Thanks to decades of investment in extensive cycling networks, a significant proportion of daily journeys are now made by bicycle rather than by car. Consequently, Dutch cities experience lower levels of congestion and pollution than many similarly developed urban areas, demonstrating the long-term effectiveness of such policies. Nevertheless, promoting cycling alone cannot fully resolve transport problems because many journeys are unsuitable for bicycles. Long-distance commuting, transporting heavy goods, and travelling during extreme weather conditions remain impractical for most cyclists. Therefore, governments must complement cycling infrastructure with efficient public transport and smarter traffic management. Expanding metro systems, improving bus networks, and integrating different modes of transport allow people to travel conveniently regardless of distance or weather, while intelligent traffic control systems further enhance road efficiency. Singapore illustrates this balanced approach particularly well. Although cycling is encouraged, the city-state relies primarily on its highly integrated public transport network, combined with policies that discourage excessive car ownership. As a result, residents enjoy reliable mobility despite limited road space, proving that sustainable transport depends on a combination of well-designed solutions rather than a single measure. In conclusion, governments prioritize cycling infrastructure because it effectively reduces both congestion and environmental pollution. Nevertheless, bicycles alone cannot meet the diverse transport needs of modern cities. Instead, the most successful urban transport systems combine cycling with high-quality public transport and effective traffic management, creating a balanced and sustainable solution. 389 words (25 minutes) #writing @st4posts 🌐
