File Inclusion (LFI/RFI) Explained 📂 One of the biggest mistakes a backend can make is trusting user input when deciding which file to load. Imagine a website like this: "site.com?page=home" The backend loads: "home.php" Now ask yourself: What if the user changes "home" to something else? 🤔 That's where File Inclusion vulnerabilities begin. 🔹 LFI (Local File Inclusion) The attacker tricks the server into loading files that already exist on the server, such as configuration files, source code, or sensitive system files. 📄 🔹 RFI (Remote File Inclusion) The server is tricked into loading a file from an attacker-controlled website. 🌐 (Less common today because it's disabled on most modern servers.) 🛡️ Root Cause 🏗️ The backend trusts user-controlled input when deciding which file to include. Backend Fix 🔧 - Normalize (canonicalize) file paths before validating them. - Never pass raw user input directly into file inclusion functions.
