📍MUJĀHADATU AN-NAFS We, as Banū Ādam, must make a concerted effort to subdue the nafs. Nafs is a term used to describe the animalist desire present in human beings. When untamed, the nafs drives an individual toward sin and fulfillment of base desires. When tamed, however, the nafs can drive the seeker to success in the hereafter. Given the central role of the nafs, seekers must make an effort to curtail and tame it. This is done by mujāhadah, or limiting the fulfilment of one's desires (i.e., crushing the nafs). ❐ It is related on the authority of Ḥasan that ʿUmar – raḍiyy ʾAḷḷāhu ʿanhu – entered upon his son, ʿAbduḷḷāh ibn ʿUmar – raḍiyy ʾAḷḷāhu ʿanhumā –, while there was some meat with them. He said, "What is this meat?" He replied, "I desired it." ʿUmar said, "Do you eat everything that you desire? It is sufficient extravagance for a person that he eats everything he desires."¹ ❐ It is also related on the authority of al-ʾAʿmašh that one day, Jābir – raḍiyy ʾAḷḷāhu ʿanhu – passed by ʿUmar – raḍiyy ʾAḷḷāhu ʿanhu – while carrying a piece of meat. ʿUmar said to him: “What is this, O Jābir?” Jābir replied, “This is meat that I bought because I desired it.” Then ʿUmar replied, “Is it that whenever you desire something, you simply buy it?! Do you not fear that you may be among those referred to in this verse: 《You received your good things in the life of the world, [and you took your pleasure therein].》 (📖 al-ʾAḥqāf, 20)"² It is important to note that the greatest struggle against the nafs comes through the sunnah, as the sunnah represents the balanced model established by the Prophet – ṣallAḷḷāhu ʿalayhi wa sallama – and his Companions – may ʾAḷḷāh be pleased with them all! –. ❐ It is related on the authority of ʾIbn ʿAbbās that a certain man went to ʾAḷḷāh's Messenger – ṣallAḷḷāhu ʿalayhi wa sallama – and said: "Whenever I eat meat, my appetite for women is stimulated and I am possessed by desire. Therefore, I have forbidden myself from consuming meat." Then – the Almighty – revealed the verse: 《O you who have believed! Do not deprive yourselves of the good things which ʾAḷḷāh has made lawful to you and do not transgress. Indeed, ʾAḷḷāh does not like transgressors. – And eat of what ʾAḷḷāh has provided for you [which is] lawful and good.》 (📖 al-Māiʾdah, 87-88)"³ ⁕ Scholars often speak of four majors types of mujāhadah by minimizing: (1) speech, (2) sleep, (3) interaction with others, and (4) food and drink. These were highly emphasized by the early scholars. The goal of mujāhadah is not to destroy every desire, nor to deprive oneself of the blessings ʾAḷḷāh has made lawful. Rather, it is to discipline the nafs until it no longer leads the servant, but is itself led toward what pleases ʾAḷḷāh. The believer learns to enjoy what is permissible without becoming enslaved to it, and to leave what displeases ʾAḷḷāh even when the nafs desires it. May ʾAḷḷāh rectify us all, Āmīn. ___________ ²➥ 📖 «Zuhd» of ʾImām ʾAḥmad, #651. ²➥ 📖 «Zuhd» of ʾImām ʾAḥmad, #653. ³➥ 📖 «Al-Jāmiʿ» of at-Tirmiḏhiyy, #3054.

📌 The Boundless Forgiveness of Aḷḷāh 🗣 ʾAbū Hurayrah – raḍiyy Aḷḷāhu ʿanhu – reported that the Messenger of Aḷḷāh – ṣallAḷḷāhu ʿalayhi wa sallama – said: «A servant committed a sin and he said: ‘O Aḷḷāh, forgive my sin!’. Aḷḷāh – the Almighty – said: ‘My servant has committed a sin, and he knows that he has a Lord who forgives sins and holds him accountable.’ — Then, the servant returned to his sin and he said: ‘O Aḷḷāh, forgive my sin!’ Aḷḷāh said: ‘My servant has committed a sin, and he knows that he has a Lord who forgives sins and holds him accountable.’ — Then, the servant returned to his sin and he said: ‘O Aḷḷāh, forgive my sin!’ Aḷḷāh said: ‘My servant has committed a sin, and he knows that he has a Lord who forgives sins and holds him accountable. So, do what you wish, as I have forgiven you.’» 📖 Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukḫāriyy #7507, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim #2758.

❐ It was narrated from from Jundab al-ʿAlaqiyy: ➥ The Prophet – ṣallAḷḷāhu ʿalayhi wa sallama – stumbled, and one of his fingers bled. So he said: «You are nothing but a finger that has bled, and what you have suffered has been in the cause of Aḷḷāh.» ___________ 📖 «Az-Zuhd» of ʾIbn al-Jarrāḥ #101. ✍️ No hardship endured for the sake of Aḷḷāh is ever wasted. The Messenger of Aḷḷāh – ṣallAḷḷāhu ʿalayhi wa sallama – himself bled and suffered in His cause, showing that trials are a badge of honor, not disgrace. Every pain endured in obedience to Aḷḷāh is rewarded, even if it seems small.
❐ It was narrated from Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd that he said: «We experienced life in both its ease and its hardship, and we found that the least (amount of worldly provision) is sufficient.» ___________ 📖 «Az-Zuhd» of ʾIbn al-Jarrāḥ #116.
