Ethiopia and Azerbaijan Sign Cooperation MoU on COP32 On February 27, Ethiopia and Azerbaijan agreed to cooperate on the organization of the 32nd session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (#COP32) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in Baku. The MoU was signed in the presence of Abiy Ahmed Ali, Prime Minister of Ethiopia, and Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The agreement was signed by Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timotheos, and Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jeyhun Bayramov. The agreement focuses on cooperation in the preparation and organization of #COP32 strengthening coordination on climate diplomacy and technical engagement related to the global climate process. The signing took place during Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali’s official visit to Azerbaijan, which also featured high-level discussions on expanding bilateral cooperation in energy, agriculture, digital transformation, and climate-related capacity building.
Single-Use Plastic Bags Are Officially Banned in Ethiopia Under the Solid Waste Management and Disposal Proclamation No. 1383/2017, the use, production, import, and sale of single-use plastic bags will be strictly prohibited starting January 31, 2026 (ጥር 23/2018), after the six-month grace period ends. What the law says - Individuals caught using or carrying plastic bags face fines - Businesses producing, importing, or selling plastic bags face heavy penalties - Repeat or serious violations may lead to imprisonment What we can do - Use reusable cloth bags or baskets - Support businesses offering sustainable alternatives - Spread awareness in your community A cleaner Ethiopia starts with daily choices. Led by Kotebe University lecturer Meseret Habtamu (PhD) and supported by environmental groups, the effort highlights risks linked to microplastics, waste buildup, weak regulation, and the loss of seasonal income for natural Qetema vendors, calling for eco-friendly alternatives that protect culture, health, and livelihoods.
