The Third Venetia

TENNO'S CASTLE During 15th and 16th centuries, the Upper Garda area and Tenno Castle served as border outposts between the Venetian domains of Riva and the Episcopal Principality of Trento. The fortress and village of Tenno were situated close to the front line between the Republic of Venice and the Principality of Trento. In the fifteenth century, during the Venetian wars of expansion and the clashes with the Visconti of Milan, the area was occupied and contested by famous mercenary captains such as Gattamelata, Francesco Sforza and Niccolò Piccinino. The castle and the heights of Tenno often served as a logistical base and operational headquarters for Tyrolean and imperial troops opposing the Venetian Republic’s manoeuvres towards the lower Sarca. Not far away, the Venetian Republic built the famous Bastion of Riva between 1507 and 1508, specifically to keep a military watch over these sensitive mountainous borders.

Via Querinissima is a transnational cultural project inspired by the extraordinary voyage of the Venetian patrician Piero Querin. After surviving a shipwreck and reaching the Lofoten Islands in northern Norway, he returned to Venice carrying not only the account of his journey, but also knowledge of stockfish - a product that would become deeply rooted in Venetian culinary culture. Today, his route provides the narrative framework for connecting ports, cities, museums, landscapes and local communities across the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Scandinavian worlds. Founded in 2022, the Via Querinissima Association promotes this shared heritage through a European network of cultural itineraries, historical research, events and local experiences. In May 2026, Via Querinissima was officially certified as a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe. This is precisely the approach to tradition we, at Third Venetia, advocate for. Fra Mauro's globe - the Venetian perspective on the world We often, almost instinctively, associate cartography with the age of great geographical discoveries, marked by the discovery of the New World. Venice also played its part in this discipline, where a number of distinguished citizens devoted themselves to creating what might be described as true works of art, as well as geographical maps. One such example is the world map attributed to Fra Mauro, now housed at the Marciana National Library in Venice, which stands as one of the finest cartographic achievements of the European 15th century. Piero Querin - From shipwreck survivor to commercial pioneer Piero Querin set sail from Venice in 1431 bound for Flanders. Instead, storms drove him into the North Atlantic, where he and the surviving crew were rescued by the fishermen of the Lofoten Islands in Norway. His extraordinary account became one of the earliest detailed Venetian descriptions of Arctic Europe and marked the beginning of a lasting connection between the Venetian world and Northern Norway. That encounter also helped introduce bacalà to Venice, where it would eventually become one of the defining ingredients of Venetian cuisine. More than a tale of survival, Querin's voyage reminds us that exploration, trade and cultural exchange have long shaped the history of the Venetian people. Read the full article on our Substack

In 1788, the Paduan priest and scholar Francesco Boaretti published Omero in Lombardia, a complete translation of the Iliad into a composite Venetian vernacular. Rather than reproducing a single municipal dialect, he selected forms from several varieties to create a broadly intelligible poetic koinè with sufficient lexical and metrical flexibility for epic. The work used ottava rima, linking Homer to the Italian narrative tradition of Ariosto and Tasso, and pursued accessibility rather than strict literal fidelity. His preface also indicates that Venetian was used by educated elites to discuss literature, politics, and other serious subjects, challenging its modern association with purely domestic or comic speech. Although the experiment did not establish a standard language and remained isolated after the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797, it demonstrated that Venetian varieties could be combined into an ambitious literary instrument capable of carrying universal epic. From San Marco to Sao Paulo - Dissolution of Venetian Identity in Brazil’s Greatest State Venetian identity in São Paulo is a suppressed heritage, replaced by a generic “Italo-Paulista” culture shaped by assimilation, urbanization, and marketable symbols. Food, festivities, tricolour imagery, and citizenship claims are poor substitutes for language, community, religiosity, and historical memory. The loss of Venetian transmission is the result of political, institutional, and social pressures rather than natural evolution. Reconstruction requires serious historical study, linguistic revival, and conscious cultural leadership. São Paulo’s experience also warns Veneto against the erosion of local identity through national standardization and global homogenization. Continue reading on our Substack

Stato da Tera and Stato da Mar - Venetian identity split between Italy and Croatia As the story goes, once upon a time there was the Venetian Republic, which was divided between the Stato da Tera and the Stato da Mar. The story fancifully continues to say that Venetians are Italians and the Stato da Mar became more and more croatized under Austro-Hungary. Although this was close to the truth, it wasn’t the complete truth. The Venetians from the Stato da Tera became subsumed as Italian, whereas the Venetians from the Stato da Mar became Croatians. The Venetian population gradually turned Croatian, and merged with the Croatians from the hinterland, keeping the Venetian language and words alive to this day, and their the last names that still testify to their Venetian origin. North-South Divide - in educational achievements and grading standards In this article, we provide an english translation of the analysis conducted by Centro Studi Eridania on the topic of the regional disparity in educational achievement and grading standards in the italian state. We observe that secondary-school exit grades (Maturità) and INVALSI scores have an almost inverse correlation on a regional basis - with Northern regions topping INVALSI tests, and the Southern ones being more generous in their grading standards.
