Historical use of singular Algiz/Maðr/Eolh runes… The Icelandic Rune Poem establishes Maðr ᛘ as the man-rune, and it was used ideographically in the place of “man” in the Hávamál, and other manuscripts. The Anglo Saxons never used Eolh ᛉ ideographically as the elk-rune, however, the historical Trollkors symbol, which represented the horns of the elk, may have been derived from the Algiz ᛉ rune in earlier times. Inverted, Maðr becomes Yr ᛦ, the yew-rune; yew is highly toxic and used for making bows, which is where List got the idea for life and death runes from. Yet, the Anglo Saxon rune poem establishes Eoh, the yew-rune, as a rune of resilience. ᛇ Ultimately, Algiz’s ideographic use as a life and death rune is a relatively recent development. In antiquity, it was the rune of mankind, elk, and the yew tree.
