  • 💻 For technical translators: the most important updates in Trados Studio 2026 😃 Trados Studio has finally moved to a fully 64-bit architecture. The previous 32-bit architecture imposed significant limitations, including restricting the software to just 3 GB of RAM. As a result of this change, plugins will also need to be updated to 64-bit versions, although these are not yet available for every plugin. 😃 Trados Studio no longer relies on MultiTerm. The previous release, 2024 SR1, already allowed users to create termbases without MultiTerm. In Trados Studio 2026, even the termbase file format has changed from SDLTB to TTB. 😃 AI Bridge has been added — an app that lets users connect to any LLM using an API key. The LLM can now use surrounding context: users can specify how many additional segments it should see alongside the segment being translated. 😃 A dark theme has been added. 😃 There are also plenty of smaller improvements: the commenting tools have been enhanced, files can now be removed directly from a project, QA warnings can be cleared in batches, and more. #tradosstudio #multiterm

  • 🤖 Citation from the article titled What Gets Lost When AI Writes, and How to Reclaim It: We’re living through a paradox in the history of human expression. Never has it been easier to produce fluent, grammatically correct text, and never has so much writing felt so empty. <...> Yet as these tools [LLMs] spread, a quieter collapse is underway: We’re surrounded by words and increasingly starved for meaning. Scroll through any content-heavy platform and the pattern quickly becomes visible. <...> The prose is competent. The grammar is flawless. The structure is sound. And yet something essential is missing. These are not acts of communication so much as performances of it, language that looks right and sounds right but ultimately says very little. What this reveals isn’t a failure of technology but a misunderstanding we’ve long held about communication itself. We’ve treated it as a technical skill, something defined by vocabulary, grammar, structure, and clarity, as though the ability to produce well-formed sentences were the same as the ability to communicate. AI-generated content exposes the limits of that assumption. Fluency, it turns out, was never the hard part. The harder work is having something worth saying — and caring whether it’s understood. #citation #AI #artificialintelligence

  • ⚙️ Let's analyze the Trados Studio error: Failed to load project from ... There is an error in XML document (X, Y). Unexpected end of file has occurred. Unexpected end of file while parsing Name has occurred. The error is caused by a violation of the structure of the SDLPROJ file. This can happen, for example, if Trados Studio terminates unexpectedly while writing data to the file. The SDLPROJ file stores information about which files are included in the project and where they are located on the disk. If the file becomes corrupted, the project files themselves may still exist, but Trados Studio can no longer determine their locations. How to fix it: 😁 Go to the folder containing the SDLPROJ file. Its location is indicated in the error message. 😁 Delete the corrupted SDLPROJ file. 😁 Start Trados Studio. 😁 Recreate the project and reconnect the relevant source translation memory (or translation memories). 😁 If necessary, retranslate the project files using the restored translation memory. For more information about this error, see this link. #tradosstudio #techtips

  • 📹 Video on how the UN interpreters work (8.5 minutes). 😁 The United Nations has six official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish. The UN intentionally recruits language professionals so that interpretation can happen directly between any language pair, completely avoiding the need for a third “pivot” language. 😁 Every simultaneous interpretation booth must be staffed by at least two interpreters at all times. 😁 The UN employs a dedicated core staff of 120 full-time interpreters. 😁 During live sessions, interpreters swap out every 20 to 30 minutes to prevent cognitive fatigue — otherwise, their brains might “fry” (much like Muammar Gaddafi's personal interpreter famously did). #translation_as_profession #interpreting

  • 🤖 Top tips for translators using ChatGPT based on recommendations from technology expert Uwe Muegge for the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL). 😃 Verify All Outputs: Always audit ChatGPT’s results. It is prone to “hallucinations” — inventing information, omitting key details, or introducing factual errors that weren't in the source text. 😃 Leverage Premium Versions: Use ChatGPT Plus or Pro for advanced capabilities. These versions can perform independent terminology research and generate custom style guides based on existing reference materials. 😃 Prioritize Data Privacy: Ensure your data isn’t used for training. Either disable the Model Improvement setting or use the Temporary Chat feature to prevent the model from learning from your confidential texts. 😃 Implement Project-Specific Glossaries: Upload or define glossaries for each project to ensure terminology remains consistent and standardized throughout the translation. 😃 Utilize Style Guides: ChatGPT can generate comprehensive style guides by analyzing provided reference texts or TMX files (Translation Memory). Applying these guides ensures a unified tone and voice across the entire document. 😃 Integrate with CAT Tools: Use ChatGPT in tandem with CAT tools. Reviewing machine-generated content within a CAT environment makes it significantly easier to spot and correct errors. 😃 Master Prompt Engineering: Unlocking ChatGPT’s full linguistic potential depends less on “hidden” features and more on the quality of your instructions. Success in translation often comes down to well-crafted, precise prompts. Note: While these tips focus on ChatGPT, they are equally applicable to other large language models (LLMs). #AI #techtips #chatgpt

  • Inspired by a webinar on the memoQ channel at YouTube about using regular expressions in memoQ, I came across an interesting example. At 36:44, the presenter demonstrates a regex query that captures all possible numbers written in Roman numerals. Here is the regex (don’t worry — it’s included for historical interest; we won’t be analyzing it): \bM{0,4}(CM|CD|D?C{0,3})(XC|XL|L?X{0,3})(IX|IV|V?I{0,3})\b The issue is that this query does not always work correctly due to the following fragment: D?C{0,3} If the number does not contain either D or C, the regex returns an empty set, which is technically present in any sentence. As a result, the query matches not only Roman numerals but virtually everything it can reach. I wondered whether experts had already come up with a reasonably compact regex that correctly matches any Roman numeral. By correctly, I mean properly formed numerals — for example, IIX is invalid and should not be recognized, since such a numeral does not exist. The most substantial discussion on this topic can be found on the Stack Overflow website. Someone managed to eliminate the empty-set issue, but ended up creating such a monster of a regex that it is almost intimidating to even copy. In practice, however, a simpler shorthand is usually sufficient for searching Roman numerals, since every match still needs to be reviewed manually: \b[IVXLCDM]+\b In Xbench, this query works correctly (see screenshot): <[IVXLCDM]+> In Word, this one works: <[IVXLCDM]@> For those not afraid of regex, here are a few useful links: 😃Regular Expressions Cheat Sheet 😃Regular Expressions for Translators at RWS website 😃Webinar about regex in memoQ and game localization #memoq #regexes #regularexpressions

  • 🔎 Most of you probably already know this, but just in case. Like any CAT tool, Trados Studio tries to simplify the translator’s work by allowing them to search for terms in concordance, or in other words, in the translation memory connected to the Trados Studio project they are working on. To perform such a search, there is a special command called F3. (By the way, it was the same in the old Trados 2007.) Thus, to find out how a fragment is used in existing segments in the translation memory, you need to select this fragment in the text and press F3. The search results will appear in the Concordance Search Window. However, there is an inconvenience: in most cases, a translator does not interact with the source text, but instead works in the target window, and thus selects a fragment in the target text. Therefore, when you press F3, the search is automatically performed in the target part of the translation memory, while you usually need to search in the source memory. Because of this, you have to switch the search to Source manually. But there is a command to search in the source text as well: CTRL + F3! It was not used in Trados 2007: the search was performed immediately in the source text of the memory, and the search in the target part was not possible at all. #tradosstudio #translationmemory #keycombinations

  • 📈 Key Takeaways from The 2026 Nimdzi 100: The State of the Translation and Localization Industry 😃 Market Growth & Projections: The language industry reached an estimated USD 72.6 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow to USD 73.4 billion in 2026. While the sector remains in a growth phase, the pace has slowed compared to previous years. This expansion is primarily driven by large-scale interpreting providers and high-growth technology platforms. 😃 A Fragmented Landscape: The industry remains highly fragmented; in 2025, the top 100 providers accounted for just 19.8% of total market revenue. The geographic distribution of these leaders includes 42 in Europe, 34 in North America, 17 in Asia, and 7 across Australia and Oceania. 😃 The Resilience of Human Translation: Translation services represent 33.6% of revenue for the top 100 companies. This core service remains largely resilient against AI disruption, particularly in high-stakes sectors where the “cost of error” is significant. 😃 Pricing Evolution: Shrinking profit margins are currently the greatest challenge for Language Service Providers (LSPs). Consequently, the industry is shifting away from traditional per-word pricing in favor of hourly rates, managed services, and licensing fees. 😃 The AI Journey: If 2024 was the year of exploring AI’s potential, 2025 has become the year of optimization — moving from experimentation to integrating AI for measurable productivity gains. 😃 The Limits of Full Automation: Early attempts to completely replace human linguists with AI often resulted in significant quality drops. As a result, many clients have returned to professional agencies and expert linguists to restore quality standards. 😃 Market Stabilization & M&A: The period of peak market anxiety appears to have passed. As the industry successfully adapts to new technologies, a new wave of strategic mergers and acquisitions is expected to follow. 😃 The “Human-in-the-Loop” Model: The translation process has not moved toward full automation; instead, it has evolved into a model centered on the “expert-in-the-loop.” In this cycle, the linguist’s role has shifted toward high-level oversight, ensuring that final outputs are safe, accurate, and deliver no harm to the end user. * * * → Nimdzi Report on the State of the Interpretation Market for 2025 #language_services_market #artificialintelligence #AI
