  • 📱 Instagram's recent typeface update has sparked some incredible typographic explorations across the design community. I wanted to see how their fresh visual identity and structural characteristics would translate into the Ethiopic script. Everyone is putting their own spin on the new Instagram logo, so I had to jump in but make it Ethiopic. Here is how their new custom typeface style looks when translated into the Ethiopic script. What do you think of this cross-cultural typographic approach? ✍️ @type_habesha #Typography #TypeHabesha #EthiopicScript #TypeDesign #LogoDesign #DesignTrends #BrandIdentity #Instagram

  • 📷 Instagram has refreshed the wordmark that appears at the top of the app after 10 years. Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, says: “The wordmark at the top of the app hasn’t changed in 10 years, so it was time for a refresh. Cleaner and more modern, with references to the original and the simplicity and craft that’s always made it Instagram." What do we think of the updated Instagram wordmark? Are you into the new direction, or do you prefer the old one? ✍️ @type_habesha

ሠዐሊ ፣ ደራሲ ፣ መምህርና የኪነጽሑፍ ባለሙያው ይገዙ ብሥራት ማን ናቸው? ✍️ @type_habesha Yigezu Bisrat: The Father of Ethiopian Type Design Ato Yigezu Bisrat fundamentally reshaped the visual landscape of the Ge'ez script. A graduate of the historic Kine Tibeb School and the official calligrapher to Emperor Haile Selassie I, he pioneered the transition of Ethiopian letterforms from traditional manuscript parchment into systematic, modern typography. Through his landmark 1958 E.C. publication, Ethiopian Typography in Gothic and Decorative Styles, he codified structural design rules for Ge'ez and introduced enduring aesthetic classics, notably the angular "Gothic" and the ornate "Goffer" (ጎፈር) styles. Today, Bisrat’s groundbreaking work remains the bedrock of modern Ethiopic typography and graphic design. By bridging centuries-old scribal traditions with the demands of modern printing and display, he set the standard for formal certificates, ceremonial documents, and publishing across Ethiopia. His visual systems laid the direct foundation for the digital Ethiopic typefaces used across screens and print today, serving as a lasting testament to how cultural heritage can be preserved and elevated through forward-thinking design. #TypeDesign #Typeface #Ethiopic #Ethiopia #YigezuBisrat #TypeHabesha

#FontFact 💡 Today, we use italic to add emphasis, but wher italic type debuted in 1501, that wasn't the goal at all. Venetian printer Aldus Manutius, working with punchcutter Francesco Griffo, introduced italic for a practical reason: fit more words on each page. The narrower letterforms made it possible to print smaller, more affordable books that people could actually carry with them. What started as a space-saving innovatior eventually became one of typography's mosi recognizable tools for emphasis. Via Fontspring What's your favorite historical type innovation?

Hot take 🔥 Designing a Latin typeface is much more difficult than designing an Ethiopic typeface. Have a blessed weekend. ✍️ @type_habesha
