So dad asked me to help replace the battery on an old laptop and since old HP saw self-service as a crime and so aimed to design their hardware as a form of punishment with the replacement process involving turning it from one side to the other several times with the battery being impossible to connect last. When I was connecting one of the contacts it deadass let out a puff of SMOKE so I disconnected it and asked dad if we should order a replacement cable. He said that the laptop doesn't have anything important on the C drive so I connected it again, assembled it without the D drive and everything worked perfectly??? We later connected the D drive and tested every system we could think of and nothing works worse than it used to. We are thinking that maybe in the process of turning it around a piece of junk from under the keyboard (which has to be disassembled as well in order to access the battery btw) has lodged itself into the contact without us noticing and burnt down when connected. Moral of the story is that the pc is ok as long as the smoke is white I guess.
