  • But as we grew older, we became absorbed in our roles: child, student, professional, spouse, parent, citizen, successful person, unsuccessful person. We became so identified with these roles that we lost sight of the awareness in which all these experiences appear. Stage 6 is about rediscovering what may have been present all along. Stage 7: Stabilizing the Discovery A person may recognize their deeper or true nature in a single moment. But recognition does not necessarily mean permanent transformation. Even after a profound realization, clarity may come and go. Sometimes we feel deeply connected and aware. At other times, we become lost again in: thoughts, emotions, fears, desires, conflicts, and everyday pressures. So Stage 7 is about stabilizing the discovery. Life becomes a process of learning how to return to that deeper awareness again and again. Eventually, the aim is to function normally in the chaotic, unpredictable world of everyday life without losing oneself in it. Stage 8: Coming into Alignment with Life This is the final stage. Here, the sense of being a completely separate, independent personal entity begins to dissolve. Instead of constantly fighting against what is happening, there is a growing sense of: “Whatever arises, I can be with it.” There is an acceptance of life as it unfolds. You come into alignment with the movement of life itself. This doesn't necessarily mean becoming passive or giving up action. Rather, it means no longer being in constant psychological conflict with reality. Life continues to unfold—and there is no final point at which that unfolding ends. The Journey in One View In a single sentence: The journey moves from simply experiencing life → being conditioned by life → unconsciously living that conditioning → questioning it → discovering awareness → stabilizing that discovery → and finally living in greater alignment with life.

  • The Eight Stages of Human Maturity Let’s explore eight stages of human maturity. These stages describe a journey from simple, non-conceptual awareness in infancy to a deeper sense of alignment with life. Interestingly, most people never move beyond Stage 3. The later stages involve questioning our conditioning, discovering our deeper nature, and eventually developing a different relationship with life itself. Stage 1: Non-Conceptual Awareness We are born into a state of non-conceptual awareness. As babies, we see, touch, taste, hear, and feel. But we don't yet have language or concepts through which to interpret our experience. Because we don't know words yet: the mind is relatively quiet, there is no developed sense of a separate self, and experience simply happens. For example, a baby may see a teddy bear. But the baby doesn't think: “I am the one who is seeing my teddy bear.” There is simply seeing. Stage 2: Getting Programmed As we grow, our body-mind gets programmed. We acquire a unique set of conditioning through: parents and family, society and culture, education, experiences, rewards and punishments, and our interactions with other people. Some conditioning is useful. For example: learning to walk, learning to speak, learning social skills. But some conditioning may become dysfunctional: excessive shyness, fear, anxiety, insecurity, or the need for constant approval. Gradually, these patterns become part of the way we experience ourselves and the world. Stage 3: Normal Robotic Existence This is where most people spend their lives. We enter the job market, form relationships, buy things, build careers, raise families, and perform all the other activities associated with adult life. We feel that we are consciously choosing what we do. But much of our behaviour is actually driven by past programming and conditioning. We think: “I chose this.” But often, we don't consciously examine why we made that choice. By this stage, our conditioning has become so familiar that it feels completely natural. We begin to think: “That's just who I am.” We are essentially operating on autopilot. The key problem Our conditioning becomes invisible because it feels like our identity. Stage 3 is as far as most people get in their lifetime. Stage 4: The Turning Point Something usually has to happen to break the trance. This stage often begins with a major shock or disruption in life. It could be: the death of someone we love, the loss of a career, a painful divorce, financial collapse, a serious failure, or another life-changing event. Sometimes it comes as a midlife crisis. Suddenly, we may realize: “Life is short. What am I actually doing with my life?” We may also discover that the lasting happiness we were promised as children—“Study hard, get a good job, become successful, and you will be happy”—has not actually arrived. For the first time, we begin to question the life we have been living. Stage 5: Asking the Big Question The turning point leads to a fundamental question: “Who is living this life?” We begin to realize that our usual identities don't completely define us. Our: health, career, relationships, achievements, opinions, regrets, memories, are important—but none of them completely answers the question: “Who am I?” And when we honestly ask that question, the most authentic answer at this stage may simply be: “I don't know.” This “I don't know” is not ignorance in the ordinary sense. It is the beginning of genuine inquiry. Stage 6: Discovering What We've Always Been With deeper investigation, we may discover something that was present from the very beginning: the capacity for awareness itself. As infants, we had a simple capacity to experience—before we developed a complicated identity and a collection of concepts about ourselves.
