  • 🌍 Climate Adaptation: Building Resilient Cities 🏙️ With climate change posing increasing risks to urban areas, it's crucial to prioritize adaptation efforts. Hundreds of millions of urban dwellers are vulnerable to its direct and indirect impacts. Climate adaptation involves anticipating these effects and taking proactive measures to prevent or minimize damage, while also seizing opportunities that may arise. Research shows that well-planned adaptation saves lives and resources in the long run. Adaptation strategies are essential at all levels of urban administration: local, regional, national, and EU. Let's work together to foster resilience, promote sustainable development, and achieve SDG11.

  • Why Are Our Cities Getting Hotter? Understanding the Urban Heat Island Effect As cities expand, natural landscapes are increasingly replaced by concrete buildings, asphalt roads, parking lots, and other impervious surfaces. These materials absorb and store heat during the day and slowly release it at night, making urban areas significantly warmer than surrounding peri-urban or rural landscapes. This is known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effect. According to the World Bank’s 2025 report, Towards Resilient and Prosperous Cities in India, temperatures in Indian city centres are already 3–4°C higher than surrounding areas. With India’s urban population projected to reach 951 million by 2050, tackling urban heat is now essential for resilient urban development. Urban Heat Islands increase cooling demand and intensify heat stress, disproportionately affecting children, older persons, outdoor workers, economically vulnerable communities, and people with disabilities or illness. They also strain water resources, reduce biodiversity, and worsen climate impacts, affecting the liveability and productivity of cities. Addressing urban heat requires integrated planning and nature-based solutions. Urban forests and increased tree cover provide shade and cool the air through evapotranspiration. Green roofs, vertical gardens, cool roofs, and the conservation of lakes and wetlands reduce heat absorption, improve microclimates, and support biodiversity. At the Centre for Environment Education (CEE), these principles guide our work in environmental education and sustainable urban development. CEE supports cities through Heat Action Plans focused on adaptation, preparedness, and mitigation. We have developed urban forests, biodiversity parks, botanical gardens, nature parks, and green campuses that demonstrate the role of native vegetation in cooling cities. Through Wildlife and Nature Interpretation Centres and Science Parks, we help citizens understand the connections between ecosystems, climate, water, and sustainable urban living. Education is central to climate action. By engaging schools, youth, local governments, institutions, and communities, CEE promotes environmental literacy and informed action for resilient cities. As India advances climate-responsive urban planning through initiatives such as the Urban Heat Island Mitigation Framework and Mission LiFE, creating cooler cities will require collaboration among governments, planners, researchers, educational institutions, civil society organisations, and citizens.

  • The Supreme Court order dated 13 April 2026 in In Re: Phalodi Accident v. NHAI & Others. The Court has issued important directions regarding National Highway safety, removal of unauthorised encroachments and regulation of roadside development. It has directed State Governments to prohibit future land-use conversion within 40 metres for residential use and 75 metres for commercial use, measured from the centre line of a National Highway, subject to IRC norms and State notifications.

    Trees change what a city actually feels like. They cool things down, reduce runoff, filter air, and give wildlife somewhere to exist. A block with mature trees feels different than one without them—quieter, less harsh, more livable. Yet cities keep prioritizing pavement and buildings over planting space. It's backwards. The greenest cities aren't the ones with the most construction. They're the ones that made room for trees to grow big and stay.

  • As cities grow, so does the challenge of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect — where urban areas become significantly hotter than surrounding rural areas due to concrete, asphalt, dense buildings, traffic, and limited green space. With climate change intensifying heatwaves, urban heat is becoming a major public health and equity issue. Vulnerable communities, especially those in informal settlements and low-income neighborhoods, are often the hardest hit due to limited access to cooling, shade, and resilient infrastructure. The good news? Cities already have many of the solutions. Key strategies to reduce urban heat include: 🌳 Expanding urban forests and tree canopy 🏙️ Installing cool roofs and reflective materials 🌿 Investing in green roofs and nature-based solutions 💧 Integrating water-sensitive urban design 🚶 Designing walkable, climate-smart neighborhoods 📊 Developing heat action plans and early warning systems 🏘️ Upgrading housing with passive cooling and better ventilation Urban heat resilience creates healthier, more inclusive, and more livable cities. The most effective climate action happens when urban planning, community participation, public health, and environmental policy work together. As more cities incorporate heat resilience into climate strategies and urban policies, the opportunity is clear: tackling urban heat can also improve air quality, biodiversity, public space, social equity, and overall quality of life.

An inclusive city is one where everyone — regardless of income, gender, age, disability, ethnicity, or migration status — has equal access to opportunities, services, and decision-making. It’s simply a city designed not for all residents, not a privileged few. This means: 🏘️ Affordable and adequate housing 🚌 Accessible public transport 🌳 Safe and welcoming public spaces 💧 Equal access to water, sanitation, healthcare, and energy 🗣️ Community participation in planning and governance 🌍 Climate resilience that protects vulnerable communities As climate change, rapid urbanization, and inequality continue to reshape our cities, inclusion is essential for sustainable urban development. Inclusive cities are more resilient, healthier, safer, and economically stronger because they leave no one behind.
