  • Christology The fear that stole Salvation part 1 Christmas is a time of giving. And what better way to talk about giving than to remind ourselves of the first giver, God. But what did God give? “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 He gave us Himself, His only begotten Son, to die in our place so that whoever BELIEVES will NEVER perish, because they will have or possess everlasting life. Such a powerful verse. God’s gift is everlasting. So many, when talking about the gift of salvation, focus on us, the recipient, but we were never the focus. God, the giver, is and always was the focus. His gift of salvation is everlasting. Ecclesiastes 3:14 (KJV) I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever… So if God does something, it will be forever, and salvation is of the Lord, Jonah 2:9, not of us. So in Christ, God has given us eternal salvation, also called eternal life, and it is something we already possess, not something we get after we die. John 5:24 (NKJV) Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. We already have eternal life because we BELIEVE. Again, take note of the words. These are words by Jesus Himself. The Bible is actually a book on the assurance of salvation. It is meant to bring the believer comfort and peace where salvation is concerned, but in a bid to make Christians more Christlike in conduct, too many preachers the world over have taught the opposite of what Jesus said. They have taught a fear based salvation with a heavy emphasis on works, but there is something interesting about fear. Its victims are far from love. 1 John 4:18 (KJV) There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. So if for any reason you live in constant fear of losing salvation or “not making it to heaven” You are far from understanding the love of God for you. That was never what Jesus wanted. 1 cor 15:1-4 tells us clearly that what a man believes in to be saved is that Jesus died for his sins and that God raised Jesus from the dead. So if you still fear going to hell as a Christian, it means you DON’T BELIEVE that Jesus died for the sin that would have taken you to hell, which means you are either not yet saved or do not understand what you are supposed to believe in. That is why the fear of losing salvation is truly the fear that stole salvation. It does not make people more righteous; it only keeps them from truly enjoying their walk with God. • We Are Called to a Relationship with God, Not a Religion. We are called to a relationship with God as believers — not a religion. The difference is not small; it defines the very heart of the gospel. The word religion comes from the Latin religare, meaning to bind. It describes a system of beliefs and practices that bind people together around their worship of a deity — structured, rule-based, and ritual-oriented. Every religion on earth is man’s attempt to reach God. But Christianity is not man’s reach for God; it’s God’s reach for man. Biblically speaking: When the New Testament uses the word religion (θρησκεία – thrēskeia in Greek), it never means religion as we understand it today. The Latin term religare — from which our English word comes — was introduced centuries later. In Greek, thrēskeia means outward worship, ceremonial observance, or external devotion — the visible practices men see, not the inner life that flows from faith. That’s why in Scripture: • Acts 26:5 — Paul says, “After the most straitest sect of our religion, I lived a Pharisee.” • Colossians 2:18 — warns against “a voluntary religion and worship of angels.” • James 1:26–27 — contrasts “vain religion” with love-driven action. In every usage, religion refers to external devotion — what man does for God — never the life of God in man. Here’s the difference: Religion reaches up; relationship reaches down. Religion says, “I obey, therefore I am accepted.” Relationship says, “I am accepted, therefore I obey.” Religion is man’s climb toward heaven; relationship is heaven’s descent into man (John 1:14). The New-Covenant shift: When Jesus died, the veil was torn (Matthew 27:51) — ending religion’s separation system. God no longer dwells in temples made with hands (Acts 17:24) but in His people (1 Corinthians 6:19). That’s not religion. That’s union — a Father and His sons (Galatians 4:6–7). Jesus didn’t come to establish a new religion. He didn’t even found Christianity — that name came later, coined by unbelievers (Acts 11:26). God never calls us “Christians” in Scripture; He calls us sons, because what we have with Him is a relationship — Sonship. To call Christianity a religion is to undermine the finished work of Christ. Jesus didn’t die to create a system; He died to restore relationship — to bring us into oneness with the Father. Even the apostles grew into this understanding. Peter clung to old religious distinctions until God corrected him (Acts 10). Paul later unveiled the full mystery — that in Christ there’s no temple, no ritual, no separation. So when James 1:27 mentions “pure religion,” he’s not redefining Christianity. He’s exposing hypocrisy — contrasting vain religion (empty show) with genuine love that flows from the Spirit. He used thrēskeia because it describes what people see — the outward expression of an inward relationship. Religion is what men see; relationship is what we have. The emphasis of the New Testament is clearly relationship with God — not religion. The Church isn’t bound by rituals; it’s bound by love. I go to church because I love God, not because I’m obligated. I recognize that I’ve been born into a family, and I honor my Father and that family by showing up. Church is the fruit of relationship. If I go merely out of obligation, I’ve missed the heart of it — “for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.” The “me and Jesus” critique is a strawman. True relationship with God naturally produces fellowship with the saints (1 John 1:3, 7). You can’t separate the two — but calling that religion misses the essence of the gospel. So no — saying “It’s not a religion, it’s a relationship” is not bad theology. It’s the clearest way to describe what Jesus accomplished: God and man reconciled, Spirit to spirit — not by law, but by love.
