🛑 Statement by Indonesian Anarchists on the Protests in Iran, Imperialist War, and the Arrest of Two Iranian Anarchist Comrades: Soheil Arabi and Afshin Heyratian From late December 2025 to early January 2026, a wave of mass protests erupted across Iran. These protests were triggered by soaring inflation, which drove the prices of basic necessities beyond the reach of ordinary people. This crisis is not merely the result of sanctions or economic collapse, but the outcome of a long accumulation of authoritarian rule, corruption, rent-seeking economics, and anti-people neoliberal policies. For many, this crisis has meant social devastation. The rising cost of basic goods has made it impossible for people to meet their fundamental needs. This situation is further worsened by high unemployment, water shortages, subsidy cuts, gender inequality, extreme economic disparity, political repression, ethnic oppression, religious discrimination, and various restrictive state policies that continue to suffocate the population. It is this accumulation of inequality over decades that has driven people into the streets against the theocratic regime. Within days, protests that began over economic grievances transformed into a broader political crisis, with demands expanding across multiple issues. As in previous protest waves, the theocratic regime responded to public anger with extreme repression. Within days of the protests beginning, the government imposed internet restrictions. Under these conditions, its apparatus, particularly the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), opened fire on demonstrators in the streets using live ammunition. The exact number of victims remains unknown, but various reports indicate that many were killed, thousands were arrested, and others forcibly disappeared. Through state-controlled media, the Iranian government accused protesters of being foreign agents or Zionist proxies. These baseless accusations have been used to justify brutal repression in the name of “national stability and security.” Amid this situation, approximately one month later, the United States and Israel, under the leadership of Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu, launched attacks on Iran, targeting military, governmental, and civilian infrastructure. These strikes resulted in thousands of deaths, including civilians and children. Far from bringing “liberation,” this intervention demonstrates that imperialist powers pursue only their own strategic interests. We firmly reject this aggression as reactionary and counter-revolutionary. History has shown that imperialist intervention has never brought liberation to any people. The liberation of the Iranian people can only be achieved by the people themselves, not by bombs dropped from the sky. In the midst of this imperialist war, the theocratic regime has continued its war against its own population. Under the pretext of a “state of war emergency,” the regime has effectively imposed undeclared martial control. Military checkpoints, including the use of child soldiers, have been established across public spaces to monitor society. Internet shutdowns persist in order to block the flow of information. Arbitrary arrests, detention, and mass executions of political prisoners continue. In this context, two of our anarchist comrades are among those detained: Soheil Arabi, arrested on March 10, and Afshin Heyratian, who was detained prior to the recent wave of protests. There are also reports that the military has used civilian residential areas as cover and political prisoners as human shields. In regions inhabited by ethnic minorities, such as Kurdish and Baloch areas, which had previously been centers of protest, the IRGC has reportedly carried out brutal bombardments. The number of casualties in these regions remains unknown, but is likely to be in the hundreds or even thousands of civilians.

🛑The Arrest of SOHEIL ARABI: Power Settling Scores with Every Voice that Rejects Domination Soheil Arabi, an anarchist political activist, was arrested on March 10, 2026 (in the midst of the regime’s second war with Israel). This arrest was neither accidental nor a response to a specific crime; rather, it is part of the inherent logic of any power that, in moments of external crisis, targets all internal threats at once. The regime, taking advantage of the wartime atmosphere, labels any voice that was previously considered troublesome as “collaboration with the enemy” or “disruption of security,” thereby eliminating it without incurring additional cost. Arabi was transferred to Ghezel Hesar Prison—the very place where, in recent months, the execution machine has devoured multiple political prisoners. At the same time, the confiscation of his property and vehicles has been raised as a possibility. This confiscation is not a legal punishment, but rather a form of war spoils: the destruction of any material foundation from which an individual might rise again. But Arabi is not alone. In this short span of war, the regime has arrested dozens of political prisoners and swiftly executed some of them. The charges are repetitive and predictable: espionage for Israel, links to opposition groups, or even past protests now reframed as collaboration with a foreign enemy. These executions—of prisoners who were already on death row before the war—demonstrate that war is not a threat to the regime, but a golden opportunity: an opportunity to settle scores with those who have never accepted domination. In wartime, power no longer even feels the need to maintain the appearance of due process; it is enough to invoke “national security” to portray any dissenter as a foreign agent and impose silence through the gallows. From an anarchist perspective, this cycle is understandable, but unforgivable. The state—any state—always uses war as a pretext to intensify internal control. The second war with Israel is no exception: the Islamic regime fights an external enemy on one front while simultaneously crushing internal opposition with the same logic. Arabi, along with imprisoned and executed political prisoners, are all victims of this structure—a structure that cannot tolerate the existence of any independent voice, because every radical critique inherently challenges the boundaries of authority. Arabi, who years ago embraced anarchism during his imprisonment in Evin and Rajai Shahr, now finds himself once again in Ghezel Hesar—a place where the regime hopes to silence him permanently. What the regime fails to understand, however, is that anarchism is not tied to a single individual, nor can it be extinguished by an arrest or even an execution. Every arrest and every execution only reveals how fragile domination truly is—how much it must continuously kill in order to survive. Arabi, in Ghezel Hesar, like hundreds of political prisoners before him, has become a mirror reflecting how power, at the height of an external war, continues its real war against its own people. This is not individual heroism, but the naked reality of authority: a state that, to survive, fires both outward and inward. And real resistance is precisely what Arabi has demonstrated for years: a complete rejection of this game, a rejection of both sides of the war, and a steadfast commitment to the principle that no power—neither Islamic, nor Israeli, nor any other state—has the right to appropriate life and freedom in the name of security or ideology. MORE THAN THOUSAND-HOUR INTERNET SHUTDOWN IN IRAN Author: Hasse-Nima Golkar The more than thousand-hour internet shutdown in Iran cannot be explained merely as “censorship” or a “technical disruption.” It is a stark demonstration of the fascist Islamic-Shiite state's ownership and sovereignty over vital communication infrastructures. The internet — often imagined as a free and decentralized space — reveals its true nature here: a network whose critical chokepoints can be easily suffocated by centralized power. In this situation, the imposed silence on society is not a side effect but a political objective. The disruption of communication functions as a form of siege — a siege that isolates protesting bodies, disrupts collective memory, and weakens the possibility of horizontal solidarity. Meanwhile, forces aligned with power continue to produce and disseminate their narratives uninterrupted, benefiting from exclusive access to infrastructure; as if “reality,” like bandwidth, has been rationed. This divide reflects more than media inequality; it reveals a monopoly over the means of producing reality itself. What circulates as “news” is not a reflection of reality, but the product of unequal access to the tools of dissemination. In such conditions, truth is neither discovered nor merely concealed — it is managed and engineered. From our perspective, this situation is not an exception but the rule. Any centralized infrastructure — even those appearing “public” or “global” — ultimately serves the reproduction of domination. Therefore, the issue is not simply restoring internet access or reducing censorship; it is about breaking the infrastructural monopoly that makes such control possible. The anarchist response is not to demand a “freer internet” from the state, but to build and expand independent, decentralized, and self-managed networks: from mesh networks and peer-to-peer communication tools to alternative forms of organization that do not depend on centralized points of failure. This is not merely a technical choice, but a political necessity. In this sense, the internet shutdown is not just a temporary act of repression; it is a revelation — one that exposes the reality that as long as communication infrastructures remain under centralized control, any emancipatory movement stands on unstable ground. Maryam Akbari Monfared was released after 17 years upon completing her sentence Today, 19 Farvardin 1405 [April 8, 2026], political prisoner “Maryam Akbari Monfared” [born 13 December 1976] was released from Qarchak Varamin Prison [located southeast of Tehran] after 17 years in prison without a single day of leave, upon the completion of her sentence. Maryam Akbari Monfared was arrested in January 2010 and sentenced by the Tehran Revolutionary Court to 15 years in prison. From that time until today, she has not had even a single day of medical or family leave. Two of her brothers were executed in 1981 and 1984, and her younger brother and sister, Abdolreza and Roghieh, were executed during the mass killings of the summer of 1988.

During the 12-day war of June 2025, Evin was directly struck: Israel bombed Evin during visiting hours. The attack involved eight strikes and killed at least 80 people, including prisoners and social workers, according to an investigation by Human Rights Watch. Now, with a new and far more intense war underway, a section of the wall of Evin Prison was targeted in a missile attack and part of the prison wall was destroyed. The current number of staff has significantly decreased. By March 2, 2026, Iranian riot police had taken over control of the prison from the usual prison staff. Reports claim that during the war prisoners have been abandoned in locked cells, while guards have been largely absent leaving prisoners trapped without proper oversight, food, or support. According to new reports, the number of staff and security forces in Evin Prison has significantly decreased, and the facility is currently operating with minimal personnel. 🔸The Legal Framework Being Violated When prisoners in Evin are deliberately locked in wards, abandoned by guards, and left without food or care, international law strictly and explicitly prohibits such conditions. This is no longer merely "misconduct" — it constitutes a severe violation of human rights and, under these circumstances, is classified as inhuman treatment or torture. Article 6 of the ICCPR protects the Right to Life: the state is obligated to ensure that no one is arbitrarily exposed to the risk of death. Abandoning prisoners without food, water, or medical care — while preventing their exit — is a direct violation, even if death has not yet occurred. Article 7 prohibits torture and inhuman treatment. Iran's own prison regulations are being violated: prisoners must receive sufficient healthy food, must have access to safe drinking water, must have access to environmental hygiene, and prison officials are mandated to be present in the wards at all times. 🔸Conclusion Evin Prison is not an exception to the Islamic Republic — it is its essence. For over fifty years, under the Shah and under the clerics, it has been the place where Iran's rulers send those who refuse to be silent. Journalists, workers, students, women, minorities, anarchists — anyone who challenges power ends up behind those walls. Today, in the chaos of war, those walls have become something even more terrifying: a sealed box in which hundreds of political prisoners are locked without food, without medical care, without contact with their families, without any protection from the bombs falling outside or the guards who have not entirely left inside. The silence surrounding Evin right now is not peace. It is a cover for what may be the worst chapter yet in its long history of atrocity. We demand the immediate release of all political prisoners.
