The UK Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT) ruled that anti-Zionism qualifies as a protected philosophical belief under the Equality Act 2010, upholding an earlier ruling that the University of Bristol unlawfully discriminated against former professor David Miller by dismissing him for expressing his anti-Zionist views. In its judgment, the tribunal said it is coherent to describe Zionism as “racist,” “colonial,” and “imperialistic” in the context of the claimant’s protected beliefs, and therefore such views are entitled to legal protection under the Equality Act. The University of Bristol dismissed Miller in 2021 for what it described as gross misconduct over comments he made about Zionism and Israel.
