US tested experimental tungsten pellet missile on female volley ball team - New York Times NYT analysis of security-camera videos, aftermath photos, satellite imagery, and munitions experts found that U.S.-made Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) struck a sports hall (used at the time by a female volleyball team) in Lamerd, southern Iran, on the first day of the conflict. Iranian officials reported 21 killed. Particularly damning is one video that showed the explosion over the sports hall. The experimental missiles (never tested) deployed an airburst (clearly visible mid-air detonation, above the target) that disperses a dense cloud of 180,000 pre-formed tungsten fragmentation pellets, creating distinctive pockmarking damage patterns rather than large impact craters. Lockheed Martin’s own product material illustrates this “pre-formed fragmentation” effect. After looking into the reports, U.S. Central Command has confirmed the accusations are false. It went on to state that the video was not of a PrSM but rather it was “consistent with the dimensions and silhouette of an Iranian Hoveyzeh cruise missile.” In other words, CENTCOM says that Iran used a cruise missile on their own volley ball team on day one of the conflict. Many users posted under their real names, potentially making individual personnel identifiable. Security experts say Iran could have used this information alongside other intelligence to monitor US forces and identify targets. Sky News highlighted cases in Bahrain and Jordan where changes in Strava activity appeared to reveal where personnel had relocated before locations were later attacked by Iran. The issue is not new: the Pentagon warned in 2018 that fitness-app location data could endanger troops. Despite restrictions, personnel from the US and UK have continued sharing activities from sensitive sites, including RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus.
