Microsoft MVP Releases a Tool for Removing AI Markers from Text and Files French developer and entrepreneur Guillaume Meyer, a Microsoft MVP for Microsoft 365, has published an open-source tool watermarks-remover designed to remove technical traces from text and files that may indicate they were created or processed by AI models. When it comes to standard technical markers, the tool actually works. The text_unicode.py module searches for and removes zero-width characters, bidi markers, Unicode tag characters, and other invisible characters. 📁 Separate modules handle files. For PNG and JPEG files, the code analyzes and removes C2PA, EXIF, and other metadata segments, including Content Credentials and markers associated with OpenAI, Anthropic, Claude, and SynthID. If exiftool is available, the tool can additionally remove any remaining metadata. 🧠 Statistical watermarks in LLMs are more complicated. There is no secret Claude or SynthID detector hidden inside the tool. The rewrite_text.py module attempts to disrupt the statistical signal through paraphrasing, back-translation, or a complete structural rewrite of the text using another LLM. The tool can indeed remove hidden Unicode markers and file metadata, but when it comes to statistical watermarks, it can only attempt to weaken them. Meyer himself explicitly warns that there is no guarantee the resulting content will pass a closed-source detector from Anthropic, Google, or any other provider. @wut_it #ai
Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM Microsoft has been working to make Windows 11 more efficient on PCs with limited RAM, but one of its own built-in applications appears to be working against that goal. According to tests published by Windows Latest, the operating system's Weather app can consume more than 1 GB of memory despite performing a relatively simple task. Windows Latest reports that the app exceeded 1.2 GB of RAM while displaying a weather forecast, with no intensive interaction from the user. Wccftech observed similar behavior, noting that memory usage typically starts at around 1 GB, drops to roughly 500–600 MB when idle, and can climb to 1.5–1.6 GB during basic actions such as zooming or navigating the interface. On a PC equipped with 8 GB of RAM, that means the application alone may occupy nearly 20% of the system's memory. According to Windows Latest, the high memory consumption is due to the fact that Weather isn't a fully native Windows application. Instead, it's essentially an MSN Weather web app built on Microsoft's WebView2 framework. Task Manager shows multiple Chromium-based subprocesses running simultaneously, which contributes to the unusually high RAM usage. The issue is unlikely to affect high-end PCs with 32 GB or more of RAM, but it could have a noticeable impact on entry-level systems. On computers with 8 GB or even 16 GB of memory, launching the Weather app may increase memory pressure enough for Windows to rely more heavily on the page file, potentially making the system feel less responsive. The application also includes advertising within its interface. According to Windows Latest, sponsored content is embedded directly into the forecast feed, appearing alongside weather cards in a similar visual style. Geuneullo is a navigator that plots routes through shady streets The Geuneullo: Summer Routes for Walkers mobile application is gaining popularity in South Korea, which helps pedestrians navigate through shaded areas of streets in hot weather, The Korea Herald writes. The service calculates the movement of the Sun across the sky, as well as the shadow of buildings and trees, and then suggests the most optimal path. The app also shows the estimated time of arrival and the percentage of the route passing in the shade. In addition, Geuneullo can tell you which places on the bus will be least illuminated by the sun, as well as which side of the subway car is better to go to avoid direct sunlight. It's noted that the service is able to build routes for runners. When choosing a path, it takes into account the shadow, the length of the distance and the degree of slope of individual sections. The navigator was developed by a 23-year-old mathematics student at Seoul National University, who himself suffered from the heat on his way to study.
