To All Consultant Surgeons & Surgical Department Heads FROM: Office of the OR Directorate / Surgical Campaign Committee SUBJECT: Appreciation & Announcement: 5-Day Intensive Pediatric Tonsillectomy Campaign  Dear Esteemed Consultants, Thank you for your incredible collaboration and for sharing your OR tables for our Pediatric Tonsillectomy Campaign! Thanks to your support, 281 children with severe airway obstruction have successfully received surgery and are now breathing and sleeping peacefully having great impact in improving their health, and bringing peace of mind to their families. The Regional Challenge & Our Progress: Over 2,000 children are currently awaiting surgery for symptomatic tonsillar hypertrophy. In alignment with the directive from the Addis Ababa Regional Health Bureau (AARHB), our target is to operate on over 500 children before the upcoming school year begins, ahead of a broader city-wide initiative involving private sector partners. Having successfully completed 281 procedures to date, we must now accelerate our momentum to reach our target. Upcoming 5-Day Intensive Campaign: To achieve this milestone, we have scheduled a dedicated 5-Day Full-Table Campaign: • Duration: Coming Monday through Friday • Target: 30 tonsillectomies per day (Total: 150 procedures) We kindly request your continued cooperation and flexibility during this intensive week as we adjust theater allocations to accommodate these young patients. A Major Milestone in Quality, Excellence & Patient-Centered Laboratory Services The Laboratory of Yekatit 12 Hospital Medical College has achieved an outstanding milestone by earning a prestigious Five-Star Rating in the latest SLIPTA laboratory quality assessment, conducted using the SLIPTA Checklist Version 3:2023, aligned with the internationally recognized ISO 15189:2022 standard. This achievement is particularly significant as it represents the laboratory’s first assessment following the transition from ISO 15189:2012 to the updated ISO 15189:2022 standard, marking an important step forward in strengthening laboratory quality and international best practices. Under the previous assessment framework, the laboratory was evaluated against 275 assessment points. With the introduction of the revised and more comprehensive assessment system, the laboratory was assessed against 367 points—a broader and more demanding quality framework. According to Lecturer Tamrat Belema, Director of the Laboratory and Microbiology Academic and Service Directorate, this remarkable accomplishment was made possible through the strong commitment, coordinated efforts, and teamwork of the entire laboratory team. He expressed his sincere appreciation to the Hospital Management, Laboratory Quality Team Microbiology staff Laboratory staff, and for their dedication, professionalism, accountability, and tireless efforts in strengthening laboratory quality standards. This achievement demonstrates that sustainable quality improvement is not achieved by a single individual—it is built through shared responsibility, effective leadership, teamwork, accountability, and a culture of continuous improvement. Yekatit 12 Hospital Medical College – Youth-Friendly Health Services August 1, 2026 15 OTZ Club Members | Ages 18–20 Yekatit 12 Hospital Medical College, in partnership with the Operation Triple Zero (OTZ) Club, delivered an engaging one-day training on Emotional Intelligence & Advanced Communication Skills, equipping young people with practical tools to manage emotions, overcome peer pressure, handle difficult situations, communicate assertively, and build healthy relationships. As part of the program, participants visited the Youth-Friendly Health Service, learning how to access confidential, respectful, and non-judgmental healthcare for young people aged 10–24, including mental health, sexual and reproductive health, HIV counseling and testing, personal development, career counseling, relationship counseling, addiction recovery, and GBV care.
