  • 12 авг.News: #Ethiopia asked by #South_Africa to share costs of deporting undocumented Ethiopian migrants South Africa has formally asked Ethiopia, #Nigeria and #Malawi to reimburse part of the R292 million (more than $18 million) it says it has spent this year deporting undocumented migrants. South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs disclosed the request during a briefing to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs on Tuesday, 11 August. Director-General Tommy Makhode said the department had spent R292 million on deportations despite having initially budgeted only R60 million for the exercise. Makhode described the repatriation programme as an “unfunded mandate,” saying neither Home Affairs nor other government departments involved had budgeted for the scale of the operation. He said transport costs accounted for a significant share of the expenditure. According to South African authorities, the reimbursement requests.... https://x.com/addisstandard/status/2087544585220165973?s=200,46%
  • 12 авг.News: #Drought returns to devastate #Tigray’s #Abergelle_Yechila Among livestock that perished due to sever water and fodder shortages included hundreds of cattle, sheep and goats, according to residents who spoke to Addis Standard on conditions of anonymity. Those alive are showing signs “emaciation and exhaustion.” “Local officials have yet to make official appeal even though our livestock started to perish more than three weeks ago,” one farmer said. More than 10 kebeles in the district are facing critical drought-induced devastation, of which at least two - #Tekleweyni, and #Tseyqema - have received “not a single drop of rain during the current kiremt [rainy season].” Similar patterns are recorded in various parts of Tigray. For Abergelle Yechila, the warning is particularly alarming. This would be the second major drought-related humanitarian crisis to hit the district in just three years. https://addisstandard.com/?p=588140,44%
  • 12 авг.#Op_ed: Unraveling the political settlement that held #Ethiopia together In this op-ed, Ezekiel Gebissa and Taha Abdi argue that Ethiopia is approaching a dangerous political precipice as conflicts in #Oromia and #Amhara persist, while tensions threaten to reignite war in #Tigray. They contend that the ruling party is using the National Dialogue to advance a predetermined agenda aimed at "dismantling the 1991 political settlement" and "replacing the 1995 Constitution." The authors note that “A national dialogue that excludes armed actors, opposition parties, and representatives from regional states” lacks legitimacy and risks becoming a political performance rather than a genuine process of negotiation. https://addisstandard.com/?p=588170,39%
  • 14 авг.#Opinion: Media Warfare, National Consequences: How #Ethiopia’s propaganda war threatens fragile peace A coordinated campaign of hostile media narratives between Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party (#PP) and the #TPLF threatens the country’s fragile stability, writes Gebremichael Negash. He argues that by replacing responsible journalism with mutual demonization, this media war is deepening polarization while critical issues—including humanitarian recovery and the full implementation of the #Pretoria Agreement—remain dangerously unresolved. Gebremichael emphasizes that "Ethiopia does not need another war—military, political, or media-driven." https://addisstandard.com/?p=588650,39%
  • 13 авг.#WHO aims to reverse DR #Congo Ebola outbreak in 3 months The World Health Organization said Wednesday it hopes to reverse the spread of #Ebola in the DR Congo within three months, but warned the deadly outbreak would not be over by then. The epidemic, which began in the conflict-scarred northeastern province of #Ituri, is spreading faster than any previous Ebola outbreak, with 4,499 confirmed cases and 2,061 deaths, according to the WHO. If all aspects of the response are implemented "at the same time across the five transmission zones, we are expecting a turnaround in three months," said Abdirahman Mahamud, head of the WHO's emergency response division. The UN health agency stressed that bringing transmission under control would not mean the end of the outbreak, with surveillance efforts needing to continue to prevent a resurgence. The DRC declared its 17th outbreak of Ebola on May 15, and the WHO two days later triggered a public health..... https://x.com/addisstandard/status/2087775233516191963?s=200,34%
  • 14 авг.650,000 refugees in #South_Sudan could lose food aid within weeks due to funding squeeze, say #UN agencies More than 650,000 refugees ‌and asylum seekers in South Sudan risk losing food aid access within weeks due to a severe funding shortfall, potentially forcing some to return to war-torn Sudan in search of help, the U.N. warned on Friday. South Sudan faces one of the world's worst hunger crises, the World Food Programme (#WFP) and the U.N. refugee agency said. More than 7.8 million people, over half the country's population, are experiencing acute food insecurity, while 2.2 million children are acutely malnourished. It is also receiving about 3,000 refugees and returnees a week from neighbouring Sudan, where a conflict that erupted in 2023 has triggered one of the world's largest displacement crises following mass killings, rape and deliberate starvation, according..... https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/650000-refugees-south-sudan-could-lose-food-aid-within-weeks-due-funding-squeeze-2026-08-14/0,31%
  • 12 авг.Thousands flee yearslong drought in #Somalia as hunger deepens and aid shrinks After nearly two weeks on the road with her five children, Luul Mohamed finally arrived in the southwestern Somali city of #Baidoa with no food and little sense of what would happen next. Drought conditions had forced Mohamed and her family to leave Saakoow, a town in the #Middle_Jubba region more than 300 kilometers (186 miles) away. They moved from village to village before arriving in Baidoa, now a major hub for people fleeing drought, insecurity and food shortages, on Aug. 3. “We are very hungry and in a desperate situation,” Mohamed said. “We have nothing to eat and can only place our hope in God, as He is the one who sustains us through this ordeal that culminated in our trip.” The family’s journey is one example of a deepening humanitarian emergency in Somalia, where years of drought, conflict and economic pressures..... https://apnews.com/article/somalia-hunger-malnutrition-displacement-28d37013c290c3327b50911a9bcfc8c20,31%
  • 14 авг.Analysis | Forced conscription reports resurface across Oromia Reports of forced conscription are resurfacing in several parts of Oromia, including areas around Sheger City and Addis Abeba. Families in East Hararghe and East Bale told Addis Standard that relatives were allegedly taken against their will. In one case, a family says it received a demand for 500,000 birr for a relative’s release. The latest accounts could not be independently verified, and it remains unclear which armed structure, if any, those reportedly taken may have been recruited into. The reports come amid wider security tensions across Ethiopia and against a backdrop of previous findings by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission concerning forced conscription, arbitrary detention and extortion in parts of Oromia. • 14 авг.New: #Tigray Supreme Court defends #Zewdu_Haftu case acquittal, says appeal remains an option The Tigray Regional State Supreme Court has defended the acquittal of two men previously convicted of brutally murdering Zewdu Haftu, saying the #Mekelle City High Court reached its latest verdict after re-examining the case in line with instructions from the Supreme Court’s Cassation Bench. The acquittal has intensified concerns previously raised over alleged conflicts of interest and the treatment of witnesses. Public discussion has focused on reports that Yared is the son of Tigray Police Deputy Commissioner Colonel Gebreselassie Belay. A surviving eyewitness, Semhal, was also previously reported to have been removed from hospital care and detained for eight months without charge. “Based on an independent and impartial re-investigation, the court rendered the verdict it deemed just,” the Supreme Court said. https://addisstandard.com/?p=588850,20%
  • 14 авг.#Chinese automaker Chery buys #Nissan plant in #Africa as EV production shifts to new markets Chinese automakers are increasingly shifting from exporting vehicles to building them in Africa, betting that rapid urbanization, a growing middle class and supportive government policies will make the continent one of the industry’s last major growth markets. It’s part of a strategy for coping with slowing demand at home and rising trade barriers in #Europe and #North_America. Analysts say the shift could reshape Africa’s automotive industry by creating jobs, developing local supply chains and accelerating adoption of electric vehicles, although weak infrastructure and policy uncertainty remain significant obstacles. In July, #Chery, China’s largest auto exporter, acquired Nissan’s former #Rosslyn plant near #Pretoria, #South_Africa, where it plans to make plug-in hybrids, battery-electric vehicles and models under its..... https://apnews.com/article/chery-africa-ev-china-autos-3138ab43620ff7e0a7d2b7b658facdf10,18%
