Brazil Orders Discord Platform To Suspend Livestreaming Over Child Safety Brazil’s data protection authority ANPD ordered chat platform Discord to suspend livestreaming features, citing failures to protect children and teens from exposure to content promoting violence, self-harm and suicide. ANPD said Discord must prove compliance within three business days and faces potential fines of up to 50 million reais ($9.67 million) per violation. The platform can appeal the decision within 10 business days, with further appeal to ANPD’s board possible. New Assault Hits Sudan’s al-Obeid as Drones Strike Capital The Sudanese Rapid Support Forces terror group, renewed its assault on the city of al-Obeid on Wednesday and stepped up drone and land attacks across the country this week following losses on several fronts, according to witnesses. The RSF has found itself on the back foot lately in its war with the Sudanese army, a conflict that began in April 2023, drawing in foreign powers and creating what the United Nations considers the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. But on Wednesday, witnesses in al-Obeid said the strategically important city in the Kordofan region was targeted by eight drones, triggering army air defenses. Two people were killed and others were injured, according to medical sources. In a long RSF campaign for control of al-Obeid, the city has suffered drone attacks and siege tactics that had decimated its power, fuel, food, and water supplies, threatening a severe humanitarian crisis. The city is estimated to currently contain half a million inhabitants, including about 100,000 people previously displaced by the conflict. Witnesses in the capital Khartoum and Atbara to the north, among other cities, reported drone strikes as well, the first since May. Meta Says It Closed 756,000 Australian Teen Accounts Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced Thursday that it has removed over 750,000 accounts suspected to belong to Australians under 16 since implementing a global ban on teen accounts. The company also pledged additional measures in response to possible regulatory action. The company reported deactivating 462,000 suspected Instagram accounts and 294,000 suspected Facebook accounts from just before the Australian social media ban in December through June. This represents an increase from the 331,000 Instagram and 173,000 Facebook accounts removed by January. Meta stated it intends to comply with the law, despite previously opposing it alongside other platforms. Australia’s internet regulator is considering enforcement action against platforms, including Meta, for allegedly failing to implement adequate compliance measures. No other platforms have released compliance data for the same period as Meta. The Australian government introduced the law, effective December 10, in response to concerns about social media’s impact on the physical and mental health of children and young teens. As other countries consider similar age restrictions, Australia has accused the platforms of undermining the ban. North Tests Another Missile In Less Than A Week North Korea on Wednesday performed its second ballistic missile test in less than a week, its neighbors said, a likely protest of the upcoming South Korea-U.S. military drills that North Korea views as an invasion rehearsal. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said a ballistic missile fired from the North’s eastern coastal Wonsan area around 6 a.m. flew more than 700 kilometers (435 miles). The Japanese Defense Ministry also detected the launch, saying the weapon landed in waters outside its exclusive economic zone, between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. While the military has yet to specify the type or range of the missile, the range it provided suggests the launch likely involved a short-range missile, which typically flies 300 to 1,000 km. North Korea has the KN-23 short-range ballistic missiles, known as the North Korean version of Russia's Iskander that has a maximum range of 700-800km. The latest launch came six days after the North fired what the South's military has identified as a short-range ballistic missile toward the East Sea on Thursday. The launches, within days of each other, were seen as part of North Korea’s extended run of weapons tests as the country has refused to return to talks with the U.S. and South Korea for years. Lebanon Becomes First Arab Country To Abolish The Death Penalty In a landmark change to Lebanon's penal system, the country's parliament on Tuesday approved legislation abolishing the death penalty, replacing it with life imprisonment with aggravated hard labour, the state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported. The vote makes Lebanon the first Arab country to formally abolish the death penalty. Justice Minister Adel Nassar, who attended the parliamentary session, described the vote as a “historic step” for Lebanon. The measure was approved by a majority of the 128-member parliament, though Hezbollah's parliamentary bloc opposed it, according to parliamentary sources. The draft legislation, submitted to parliament in October 2025, was backed by seven lawmakers from different parliamentary blocs. The proposal, put forward by member of parliament (MP) Abdul Rahman al-Bizri, was amended before it was approved. Under the amended law, crimes committed before the legislation takes effect will be punished by life imprisonment, while offences committed after it takes effect will carry aggravated life imprisonment, NNA reported. The law follows the decades of lobbying for such decision by the Catholic church, and other Christians churches. A paragraph 2267 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, rejects the death penalty as an attack on human dignity and expresses the Church’s commitment to working for its abolition worldwide. In an interview this year, Father Bernard Poggi, rector of the Latin Patriarchal Seminary in Beit Jala, near Bethlehem, warned that "using the death penalty as a deterrent or political instrument distorts the very meaning of justice.“ A 2010 study conducted by Beirut-based Statistics Lebanon and cited by the U.S. Department of State found that Lebanon’s 4.3 million-person population was 45 percent Christian, 48 percent Muslim and 5.2 percent Druze.
